I am looking for a compass I can mount on my dash. I would really like am electronic one (WayFinder type) that would tell the temp. and all that. However, I have been told by many people that they are pretty inaccurate.
That being said, does anyone have ideas on a traditional style "ball" compass? Makes/models would be great.
Thanks

Why not try West Marine (www.westmarine.com). I've just ordered a Ritchie Sport X-10 Auto compass Pt No 385320. Should be here in a couple of days. Says its 'compensated' for vehicles.

Looks very similar to the Silva shown.

Regards to all

Or...just get a nice GPS if you really want to know where you are going.

I'm an analogue man opposed to digital when it comes to compasses and speedos and tachos and watches. I like the quick and symbolic feedback.

I have a maritime analogue compass fitted to mine and the instant feed back is great...although it doesn't like the disturbance of driving on corrugated roads as it tends to spin.

The GPS is a great backup but usually there is too much happening elsewhere to focus on all the detailed information.

Whew!! Relieved to hear I'm not the only one having "digital" issues.

I easily visualize compass info and headings in my brain. I think I must be hardwired that way or something. As much as I try to make the switch, I frequently find my brain short circuiting by information overload from GPS.

Hoping that improves with time? I've decided that it IS hard to teach an old dog new tricks :-)

I don't like digital watches either!! :-)

I like analogue displays too hence always wear analogue type watches. The only time I wear a digital watch is when I ski. I have a really old $25 Timex Expedition digital watch that refuses to die so I put a broad velcro watch band on it that I wear over my gaitor style gloves. It's impossible to read the time if it's underneath but this method seems to work.

As for the compass, I do have a Wayfinder and haven't had any huge directional issues. It seems to tell the correct compass heading but the temperature portion sucks. That could be just where the sensors are but this is my second Wayfinder. The first one stopped working about a couple months later so sent it in for warranty. They sent me a new one back though by FedEx which I just received a bill for which turned out to be half the cost of the unit! Not sure but doesn't warranty mean that the company pays to have the the unit replaced and returned to the customer??
