I just went out and got a hi-lift, and I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find some good resources on how to use it well. Techniques and such . . . I am a beginner after all.

Sam,

Try the Bill Burke Unstuck! video.
http://www.bb4wa.com/

I have the previous version (30 minute VHS). The Unstuck! video covers basic recovery techniques using a Hi-Lift, winch, and recovery straps.

The newer version is supposed to be much longer and on DVD.

Sam:

I have the new DVD. It's worth every penny... especially if you are new to recovery. You're messing with lots of forces and the potential is there for something to go seriously wrong if don't know how to use the equipment.

Another resource may be to join a local club and learn from others.

Be careful.

I second that. Start with a Bill Burke video.

Actually, the Bill Burke DVD "Getting UNStuck" is much better than the VHS video, about 2 hours long, covers the Hi-Lift even better, and hits lots more recovery techniques than the video. It's only about $30-35, but great demonstrations and explanations. Damned good insurance/training.

Enjoy your new rig and your Hi-Lift. Happy trails,
Ray

Steve, you should also read/print the articles on Bill's website (http://www.bb4wa.com/) regarding the Hi-Lift and other great subjects. Go the the home page, hit "Articles", and peruse the list of fairly short but useful articles Bill has written over the years. (I am not a paid agent or anything, just an extremely satisfied customer/student/trail follower). But the DVD really is sort of "must viewing" for newbies.

Enjoy,
Ray
