i'd recommend going to a local auto parts store for these items as shipping will be steep.

From all the jack stands i've seen they all to appear to be cheap in quality , including Snap-on jack stands. i see no reson to go gourmet for those. $35 a pair of 6 ton jack stands seems about right. the 3 ton ones are too short for your Rover.

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=0 0950150000

The jack i am not sure about. I've never used a good one so i might not realize what i'm missing.

My sears jack he held up very well for the straight up abuse i've dished onto it.

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=0 0950143000

don't get the combo kit sears sells or you will be stuck with the 3 ton jack stands and they are scary to use.

Costco sells a truly badass dual piston 3.5 ton jack for about $80 or $90. I have had mine for about a year and the thing is amazing. I know that many jacks look similar, but the Costco Arcan one look very similar to that Snap-On one except wider and lower.

I use a 3.5 ton Michelin floor jack that seems to do the job pretty well. I hightly doubt Michelin had any real part in manufacturing it, but the blue does look sharp. I believe I paid about $100 at Sam's club.

Sam - do you have an air line available? I've been using Paul's 3.5 ton floor jack, but I have to carry it down a couple of steps to my driveway, and that's a real pain in the back! But I've also got a 12-tonne pneumatic bottle jack and its very nice indeed!

12 tonne pneumatic

Its small and light, and I can get the rover up on 2 stands with very little effort. (But the jack doesn't fit under the diff, I have to do it in 2 steps.) Sears has them in their web page, not in the store, but you can pic up. But Northern Tool sells the exact same one for a bit less.

paul you are satisfied with the 3.5 ton jack stands?

i found that they have to be extended too far and made the truck feel unstable. where the 6 ton ones you just keep it on the lowest setting and it's all good in the hood.

That is a good point Rob. I had to extend the stands to the end if I place then under my sliders. But, I have installed a lift on a D1 and a D2 with them and they performed as required. I guess you just have to keep an eye on them.

no i don't have an air line.
as for the 3.5 ton jacks v 6 ton, if the 3.5 ton supports the vechile and the only issue is the height of them, why not just slap some 2 x4's with a wee sheet of metal under them to get the height required. Seems like the price different between the 3 1/2 ton v the 6 ton is quite abit... just a thought i guess

Kmart! Great big massive ones that take like 12 tons are dirt cheap. Its not like they wear out fast! I just make sure that once its on the stands, I stand next to the rover and push it back and forth / left and right as hard as I can to make sure if its gonna fail it does it then and not with me underneath it heaving on a wrench.:-)

When you buy jack stands, go as big as you can. Not that you need something like 12 tons of capacity, but the larger jack stands are wider at the base and less likely to tip under load. Also, the saddle doesn't have to be lifted as far to lift a tall vehicle.

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/pro_det.asp?search=true&item_ID=56285&PartNo=ya87 5a&group_id=1725&store=snapon-store&tool=all

One reason I like these stands is because they are short enough to fit under the frame of a stocker yet they are very wide and stable under a very tall truck like my truck or Ho's truck.

We have some 2.5-ton stands here at the shop as well. They are significantly shorter and the saddle has to be raised a lot to lift the frame on a lifted vehicle like my truck or Ho's truck. I don't like using the smaller stands at all so we bit the bullet and got the big ones from our Snap-on guy.

Also, all stands are not created equal. Compare some good ones next to the cheapo ones. You'll be amazed at the differences.

How much is shipping on the Snap-on jack? I have no idea. Ask Snap-on to have a Snap-on truck come by your place and drop off the jack to you.

Remember, that jack is $600. That's a lot of money. If you're serious and you want a very nice jack, that Snap-on jack is nice. But you pay for the quality.

If you want a cheaper jack, I like that blue Michelin jack that Ian Kreidich has from Sam's Club. I've used this jack before and it's pretty nice. It's no Snap-on jack. It's not even close. But it's $100 and much more affordable for people who can't write off their tools. This Michelin jack seems a LOT nicer than the Craftman jacks I've played with at Sears but never used under a truck.

"more affordable for people who can't write off their tools"

for those out there who let John get under your skin because he seems to have become the Snapon poster child, remember that tool purchases are different for those of us who (a) turn a wrench for a living or (b) have a business that enables us to write off these costs.

by the way, John have you seen the latest snapon promo, aluminum jack and stand combo (even comes with a mini demo jack) in the $350 range. almost bought one last night.

but i upgraded my air hammer to this ,with the quick disconnect, instead.

Sam, it sounds really cool to be able to write off your tools, but it's not. At my old job, I could have bought several times the tools we have now at the shop in a single year, not be able to write them off, and I would still have more money in my pocket. Don't a get a job where you can write off your tools. Get a job that pays boat loads of money and then buy all the tools your heart desires.

Marc, I saw that new Blue-Point aluminum jack and stands. The stands didn't do it for me, but the baby demo jack was sweet. Our Snap-on guy gave us that that baby demo jack for free and now it sits on top of our KRL with our other junk:

http://www.expeditionexchange.com/snap-on/minijack2.jpg

Our Snap-on guy is really good to us. Every time Snap-on has any kind of toys or whatnot, he gives them to us.

Yeah, we got that air hammer with the quick disconnect chuck. I haven't even used it yet. LOL. It was on promo a few weeks back and I couldn't resist. I swear, that Snap-on truck is my biggest weakness.

Speaking from the "cheap fuck" seats, Sam's Club has a really good deal on a "Goodyear" floorjack for $59 and "bling-bling chrome" 6-ton jackstands for $22/pr. I was so happy with the floorjack and the jackstands that I bought a 2nd floorjack and 3 more pairs of stands. They also have those aluminium racing floorjacks for like $120.

I agree the craftsman does well, the snap-on is most def the sex-appeal but shit. craftsman is good I have a few snap on items and craftsman. no doubt I would love to have everything craftsman in a MAC tool-box but to many other expeditures to consider. I have used Snap-On and craftsman both are nice. its easier to go to sears than it is to chase down the snap-on truck when something breaks and you want to warranty it.....

That's pretty funny Phillip. Your contention that you've used both Snap-on tools and Craftsman tools and "both are nice" is very contrary to most people's experience. Most want to dump their Craftsman stuff and replace what they've dumped with Snap-on tools, but can't afford to because Snap-on stuff is so expensive.

Just what Snap-on tools do you have and which ones have you broken? I'm very curious.

I have no desire to dump my Craftsman tools for Snap-on. I've used my Dad's Snap-ons and they work no better than my Craftsman, they just cost alot more, and we've really beaten this subject half to death haven't we? I know, I'm a Cheap Fuck! LOL

You just have to ask yourself: What's my budget, and how much can I buy for it? If your answer is $2500, you can but one 1/2" socket set from Snapon.

Or, assuming one socket set is not all you want, you can buy 10 times that amount of great-quality tools from Sears/Huskey/PepBoys. 1/4" drive, 3/8" drive, 1/2" drive, perhaps a few 3/4", ring spanners, crow feet wrenches, breakers, extensions, 12 point, 6 point, 8 point, offset wrenches, stubby wrenches, stubby ratchets, low profile sockets, deep sockets, thin walled sockets, all in metric and inches, socket spanners, flex heads, T's, universals, wobblers, internal ratchet spanners, screwdrivers, allens, allen sockets, torx sockets and keys, thin profile wrenches, adjustables....

Now, for the average so-called cheap fuck (non millionaire tax-deducting snap-on rep), who has to take out an engine (say), which of those two tool kits is gonna do the job for you best?

I might go for a snap-on torque wrench though:-) Everything else, just shear Cr-V brute strength and a decent design are sufficient for me.

You can tell alot about a jack in the way that it lifts , the width and the holding valve. John there has my jack and my stands. I better check to see iof they are still there.... The better the jack the fewer strokes it takes to lift. The better handle. AND the most important. The expensive jacks can be serviced and rebuilt with readily available parts...You can find cheap jacks that will lift a heavy vehicle with very few pumps but they will be hard pumps. Not so with the high end jacks....

"I have no desire to dump my Craftsman tools for Snap-on. I've used my Dad's Snap-ons and they work no better than my Craftsman, they just cost alot more, and we've really beaten this subject half to death haven't we? I know, I'm a Cheap Fuck! LOL"

Yeah, that's hilarious Randy. We may have beaten this subject half to death, but let's beat it a little more and see what comes up.

Your statement is very interesting. So now your position is that Snap-on tools work no better than Craftsman tools? Remember this post by you on the Discoweb Lounge thread?:

"Posted on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 - 12:59 pm:

Wow, I actually agree with John Lee! There is a difference. I have both Craftsman and Snap-On and have been slowly upgrading all of my wrenches to Snap-On. Craftsman aren't horrible, you can sure do alot worse, but Snap-On are much better.

John, have you ever tried MAC wrenches? I've used them on rare occasions, but not enough to get a feel for how they stack up. I have a friend who swears by them, but he could never explain it like you just did for Snap-on."

Your two statements don't quite jive, do they? Were you lying then or are you lying now?

Here's the thread in case you want to refresh your recollection before trying to come up with yet another lie to reconcile your conflicting stories:

../17/28993.html>

If you're going to lie, at least keep your lies straight. I think you've demonstrated that whatever you say or post isn't worth jack shit.

Just to add....the tool porn line is hilarious. One of my colleagues thinks D-web is car porn for me (see what he knows? he calls it CAR instead of TRUCK!)...and he's right. Ebay motors, EE and D-web are my links of choice! :-)

Oh,and I know nothing about jacks. Sorry. But being a girl, I would have to agree with Kyle about the fewer pumps and the ease...

I'll butt out now. :-)

i've pumped kyles jack and it takes only a few soft strokes to get it all the way up.

the jack stands were less impressive and i saw no differnce between those snap ons and a decent set of pep boy 6 ton stands.

ROFL Did I really say that? What the fuck was I thinking? I musta been young and immature last summer! I can only imagine that I was sucking up to try to get you to like me.....LOL

Ironically, I gave away the few snap-on items I had to your friend Evan. They were older and I didn't relly use them, so I gifted them to him for helping me out on a project.

Seriously, I don't really give a shit either way whether it's Snap-on or Craftsman as long as I don't have to use a rock like you made Ron Brown do!

Damn I can't stop laughing.....

Oh John, please understand, I'm not laughing with you, I'm laughing at you! I wish you knew how much you are the butt of jokes all around the LR event schedule on the East Coast! And my lack of credability to you is of no more importance than your lack of credability is to me. I know you think I hate you, but I really am just very indifferent about you.

I wish they made hydraulic jack stands. You know, like a self-lifting and auto locking stand. I'd buy 4 of them.

We have this cool set-up at work. Hydraulically powered, electronically linked / controlled jacks. I can sit in front of an airplane and bring the entire thing up, perfectly level within a few degrees. All with a control box. It's only a few hundred thousand dollars for the set up.

Rob,
I want one of those (first pic). But I have to wait for a house extension first, and I'm not sure if the zoning office will let me build a garage tall enough. Disco is already like 8 feet tall!

Until then, hydraulic stands is what I want.... Or a locking jack with a big ass head.

"I know you think I hate you, but I really am just very indifferent about you."

Yet more bullshit from your lying mouth. How old are you? 50 something? You've lived that long and you're such an idiot that you still think "I don't care" means you actually don't care? I expect that shit from teenagers who are young enough to think the indifference card carries any weight. From a man your age it's really quite pathetic.

As I said before, you've shown yourself to be a liar. You lied about your purported Snap-on wrenches and you're lying now to cover up your past lies. Once a liar, always a liar, or so the saying goes. Anything you say or post isn't worth jack shit.

John - I believe "mistaken" is a much better word than liar. I know Randy and don't think he would intentionally tell an "un-truth".

How about we all play nice. Some people like Snap-On, some like Craftsmen and opinions are like assholes and everyone deserves to have one. I prefer the big rock over an overpriced tool anyday.

John, I can see that you are an angry man, but I am unclear about why? Is it that you suffer from a Napoleon Complex due to your diminutive stature? Or do you just suffer from the Angry Gay Man complex? Or is it the dreaded combination of the worst of both? You really are an embarassment to yourself. I'm sure your Mother would be ashamed of how you turned out.

Dean,

just pave your back yard and put it there. nail it to the ground with spikes so it's movable and you should be cool with local building permits :-)

or better yet, have your roof attached to the top of the lift that way as it goes up the building extends.

the rest of you bitch at each other nicely now.

I was never sure if those lifts could be left outside, rain and snow for years, and still live longer than a wet-tail hamster. Its not something that a lot of people have in their back yards, around here at least.

Dean, get a nice tarp for it, or maybe extend the rails of your car port so the roof is higher

I would assume as long as it's properly lubed and greased, it should work fine....LOL

Other option of course is to dig under your driveway kinda like those oil change places....

It would indeed be nice to walk under my vehicles to change the oil:-) But if I get one, it will be inside, that's for sure.

Lets end this endless debate once and for all.
Either you are:
1) a cheap fuck
2) part time tool guy
3) low on cash
4) have a family
5) really don't care
6) never really test the outer limits of tool tolerences
OR
a) a rich fuck
b) full time tool guy
c) have cash falling out of your pocket
d) are single
e) really really really care
f) sometimes find that limit

Before you start any tool discussion please mention what categories you fall into. Then, if you are a 1-3-6, the a-c-d's rediculous comments can be ignored. If you are a-b-c-d-e then you can piss off the 1-3-5's and we can all go home happy.

( legal disclamer - this note was intended to be incredibly stupid , yet funny in some twisted way, like most of the comments in this thread. )

This is NOT directed at any particular person here, its just an observation, but....

A very big part in all of this is the way some people treat their tools:

1. Putting a 6 foot long pole on everything
2. Using the wrong size sockets,
3. Using 12 points instead of 6 to start undoing a nut,
4. Using an impact driver on everything posible
5. Spraying everything with WD40 so the socket slips.
6. Undoing wheel nuts with a torque wrench
7. Endless other abuses and crap

So I supppose in that case they need the additional strength that snap-on tools will provide so they can continue to abuse and break things for an entire lifetime.

D.

When you consider the "LR event schedule on the East Coast" the whole thing just makes you more laughable... And no Not with you , AT YOU.....
Please try harder if you are going to continue to attempt jabs at John , its just sad...
