How does the terrain selector switch work? Is it a transmission thing? What does it actually adjust? From what i see, it looks like just another thing to break to me. ~jp |

Think we're going to have to wait and find out. Suspect that it coordinates via electronics (gulp) the suspension height and drivetrain operation (lockers) |

It makes the plasma flat screen pop up out of the dash, blacks out the windows, starts up the Virtual Reality movie, opens the glove box so you can grab your 3D glasses, and pops some corn for ya so you can think you are off roading while actually sitting in the parking lot at the mall waiting for your wife to buy a leather handbag. |

I have read that it adjusts suspension, transmission and throttle to the demands that the situation calls for. This is in order to maximize the vehicles ability to traverse the obstacle with ease. (Damn speed bumps need less throttle, taller suspension and shorter shifts!) P.S. I'm sorry if that last part was stupid, I'm tired and my humor ability is somewhat skewed. |

The real question is...what happens if you happen to be driving on sand and you select the mud/ruts setting? How in the world is LR going to prevent this from happening? This strikes me as a major liability concern that LR has overlooked. Can you imagine the embarrasment on the trail if, while reaching for your latte, you inadvertantly move the terrain switch to sand and you happen to encounter rocks dead ahead. I can hear it now as a group comes upon a formidable obstacle... Driver 1: Wow, that obstacle appears to have mud *and* rocks. Driver 2: Yeah, that's a tough one....what setting are you going with? Driver 1: Hold on, let me get the manual out....I'm thinking mud because the manual says the "rock" setting is for rock crawling and those rocks ahead are fairly small. Driver 2: You animal! Mud? That's a gutsy move, those rocks look big to me, I'm going with the rock crawler setting. Driver 1: Okay, go ahead, just watch your line....need a spot? Driver 2: No, the manual says that in rock mode the air shocks will raise the truck up to clear most large obstacles and the rear locker will provide traction on-demand so I can just walk right up and over. Driver 1: ......maybe I'll try "sand" mode..... the horror......the horror |

There needs to be an 'Xtreme' mode setting. I expect that will only be available in the LR3 XD |
