my parents need to get a new vehicle, since their Eldorado is on its way out. Took them to test drive a Freelander and my mom likes it (eventhough she hasn't driven in 25years) and my dad likes it too.

Look around. The dealers are trying to get rid of the 2002 models. I was able to get my SE at below the price of an S. You might also want to look into the serive loaners they are selling now. 7K in miles and still in really good shape.
I have heard of someone picking up an S for around the 20K range. Just shop around and if there are several LR Centers in your area go to each one. I went about 250 miles away to get mine for a much better price then the local dealership.

Been looking for my wife, and right now they are doing some great year end clearance stuff. I was told 3k off of an S, 4k off of an SE, and 5k off of an HSE. The service loaner I was looking at was stickered at 30,2XX and with about 9k miles on it, the price was at 24,2XXX. Not bad options out there right now. I think my wife wants a Disco though..

I traded my '97 Disco in on a '02 Freelander SE. It was a service loaner with about 9K as well. It is great. I got mine for right about the same time figure that Robert mentioned. It is the SE with sunroof, front brushbar and taillight covers.

I'm going to hi-jack this thread instead of starting a new one - hope that's okay with you all!

The missus is tired of driving her rear wheel drive in the rain and ice here in the NC, and called some dealers today on slightly used Freelanders.

Having owned a Disco for years, what are the key things I should look for in a 2002 / 2003 Freelander. Again, I'm a novice, but do all three levels of trim utilize the 2.5l V6? I thought the S was a 4 cyl - shows you what I know!

She has gotten prices that run the gamut $24k for a 7k mile 2003 SE, and $21k for a like-milage S.

I'd love to step up to the HSE trim levels - what will she really be missing out on in the SE?

Thanks for your indulgence - we're excited about having a Hippo in the family.

Cheers,

e

All thee levels have the same engine and drive train. The differences between them are things like:

Leather seats
Heated seats
Sun Roof
Stereo system
tires and wheels

Obvious things to lookout for that are a little too common:

Leaky sun roof
Heated seats that don't work
Heated windshield that don't heat
Funny smell (coolant) from heater

Get a LR "Certified" vehicle if you can. I did and have had zero problems. But there are other things to be weary of - if you can get the maintenance history watch for these warning signs:

Real Main Seals Replaced
Heater Core Problems
Chronic "F-4" error message light warnings

I love the car and wouldn't trade it for anything under $30,000. Paid $17,500 for a 2002 "S" w/ 12,000 miles and have added a few accessories since (see profile picture). Have seen 03 "S" and "SE" models that were low mileage loaners go for under $20K.

Hope that was of some help.

Hey Bill:

Totally agree. I got an ex loaner and had most of those faults, but I love it. I've owned Discos, a D90 and a 95 RRC. My Freebie is a good daily runabout and I've taken it off road with the dealer and local clubs and it's very good, even compared to my other LR's. I might think about a set of MTR's for it, but otherwise nothing needs doing to it to embarrass a few stock Disco drivers!!

It seems some 'hard core' posters can't accept that Land Rover might have got it right without all the 'old fashioned' hardware on a Disco or D90. Sure it's not conventional, but then it's a good compromise for us who can't run a tricked out truck and a car too (y'know, mortgage, teenagers, spousal support payments.............)

So, to all you naysayers, you won't know until you try, you won't try because you don't want to be even a bit wrong. So you loose!
