In the near future, the womenfolk will need a new vehicle. We went over and looked at the Freelander and it seems like a nice little car. Based on what you see at the dealer, it looks good. I have a few questions, some basic, some kinda floating out there: 1. Can you run unleaded gas in it? I know the Disco is supposed to take premium. I think we messed up our disco by putting regular in it and I don't want to have to mess with higher octane gas. 2. Any major mechanical problems? I know its a landy, but if it is a REAL problem with breaking down then that isn't any good. 3. What kind of gas mileage? The little sticker said around 21 mpg. Is this close? The vehicle will be mostly a runabout around town. 4. Off road? I have been granted permission to use it (if I so desire). I figure I might take the little beast off road just for kicks (to contrast the 109). I know about Darbie, but that was a different set of conditions that are not paralleled here (so don't go there). So, what do y'all think? Max T. |

Max, My wife bought a Freelander last June, so here are our experiences. 1.The owner's manual even says use 87 octane. No problems there. 2.Only problem was a stuck thermostat, which we hadn't even noticed, but the dealer warrantied while doing an oil change. 3.She usually gets about 18 around town. We have gotten as high as 28 on freeway trips. 4.No experience off-road, though I hear they're quite good. We did have problems in 16" of new snow, but I credit that mainly to the low profile street tires. Good luck! Jeff |
