Hello all, I've been shopping for an additional vehicle that is more highway friendly and doesn't need attention every other day. I love the Disco, and won't get rid of it, but I am looking at a Freelander now for my daily driver. I do ALOT of driving, and was curious about who out there has put alot of miles on a Freelander, and how has the ratio of downtime/shoptime compared with how many miles you've driven? Later..RS

33K miles since last Sept when I got the Freelander. Since then it has been in the shop 2 times. Once for a replacement shifter (f4 error mentioned earlier about 5 hours worth of work) and again to get the sun roof fixed. These are the only visits outside the normal 12K service visits. The downtime is much less then my old Disco.

 Frank,
Why did you need a new long block so soon?

The car started like always in the driveway, backed up 20 feet and died. The engine cranked but wouldn't start. The car was never off-road (that's what the Disco is for!). In short, the cam broke causing valves to mess up cylinders. We got a '03 Disco loaner for 3 weeks and all was under warranty. The engine seems a little smoother now then it ever was - but that may just be me imagining things. There really was no warning to this failure.

But here's what the bill said:

Crank no start. Camshaft broke causing engine to go out of time and damage valves. Check engine. No start. Check fuel pressure..OK. Connect T4 found camshaft sensor fault. remove cam gear cover and found camshaft not turning when engine is turned with breaker bar. Remove intake cam and replace. Set timing on L/S head and try to rotate. Cam is biding in journal. Remove cam. Install new L/S head assy. Install timing belt and all other parts. start vehicle. Noise from R/S head when timing was disturbed from cam breaking. Call Techline.

Crank over engine..noise from R/S cylinder head..perform compression test. Found cylnders 2-4-6 had no compression. Call Techline talked to Mike. Advised to remove R/S head and inspect...Remove intake and head. Found valves contacted on cyls 2-4. Cyl 6 had a brocken valve which shoed piston and cyl damage. Remove engine and replace long block assembly. install engine and all parts. connect T4 and clear codes. start engine and road test.. ok
