They did low impact crash test 5 mph on the news last night and the Freelander scored poorely with the Honda CRV and Rav4 in the rear bumper being worth shit. When backing into a pole the spare tire smashes out the rear window. Damage for impact at over $5000.00. The only one to pass the test was Subaru Forester.

So don't back into a pole, then.

hahaha.. those were my thoughts exactly. if you dont want the back window broken, then WATCH when you back up!! that lil rig was movin when it hit the pole.. i dont know anybody who backs up that fast. apparently "5 mph" is faster than i thought.

Once again, the insurance industry wants to frighten the crap out of prospective owners and fuel the fire against suv's etc. They can then sit back and charge high premiums and say 'we told you so, see our crash figures'. What a joke!

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety test facility is located in Greene County, VA... just about 5 miles from my home. While I have no relationship with them, I have visited their test facility. They are a very professional business funded by the insurance industry.
It is the relative damage to vehicles that should be noted. When I toured the IIHS facility they had just been testing the new VW bug for the same "pole impact" and it sustained only a golf ball size dent while other vehicles lost large pieces of their bodies. Ask yourself how other vehicles in the Freelander's class are holding up.
5 MPH is a relatively slow impact... other tests are done at 40 MPH (side, front, angle) and if the Freelander can't handle 5MPH , how will it do in the 40MPH tests?
As a side issue ... I found their testing of already cracked windshields interesting. There seem to be a lot of folks driving around with cracks in their windshields... and if they are in an accident there is a possibilty that those windshields can become head cleavers.

Also....
The IIHS randomly buys vehicles off the lots of dealers.. not from the factory. They even offer crash-tested vehicles to those foolish enough to buy them.

Who backs into a pole?

They should have backed them into a honda accord. Bet the damage is much less when it stays away from the tire.

I have seen a lot of discos, DIIs, and RRs that have been rear ended at pretty good speeds and damage is usually neglidgable. Where as if you hit the spare tire (like on a Freelander) the damage is expensive.

Unless I'm mistaken, this test is not for safety standards but for cost of damage. The spare wheels always cause high dollar damage. If you back a VW Beetle into a pole, you hit the plastic bumper. Back a Freebie into a pole, you hit the bumper/wheel, then the wheel deforms the door and takes out the window, then the hinges bow out the side panels, etc Remember, this is an insurance study that is concerned with cost of repairs to be paid by insurance co.

Last year it was the Jeep Liberty (same wheel/door/window issue).

The windshields are being recalled and the crack is a hair line crack about 1" long were the heat to the windshield goes to I think. It isn't a problem at all they are perfectly good.

the tests have been "set up" to make the worst look normal

the off-set head on is there big test ...but yet there own data says that less the 1/10th of 1% of all crashes happen this way

and the ones that do happen this way happen at faster speeds and almost allways kill both drivers no matter what kinda car.

people should just not fall asleep on 55mph 2 laners...that simple

the IIHS is set up to seam like the good test guys down the block...what they really are is owned and opporated to help the big Insurers screw you outa your hard earned dough.

MB was doing better testing 40 years ago and have done more for safty then the IIHS will ever do

i backed into a dodge neon at about 3 mph casing no damage at all to my disco and about a $1000 dollars to the neon. Not even a scratch or displacement of the bumper on my vehicle.

I backed over the hood of my wife's car(!). Damage to her vehicle $600, damage to my DII $0. It didn't even hit the bumper. The skid of the fuel tank ripped her hood open. I couldn't see her car 'cause it sits too low. Now a pole I would have seen!

I backed into a tree while wheeling with my Disco and if you don't look real close, you can't even see it.

As for their claiming the Subaru was a less expensive fix, my wife (the auto insurance adjuster) cringes whenever she gets a claim on a Forester or Outback. Both are frequently totaled when run over mall parking lot curbs.

The first one she totaled had been driven over a curb and through a yard, striking a bush. All of the plastic parts (most of the car) were destroyed, totaling the vehicle.

The same thing happens to Nissan X-terras due to the plastic in the front end.

The freelander and other trucks fail that test because of the rear spare tire being mounting on the back door. The pole makes contact with the tire, before the bumper, causing the rear door to concave braking the rear window. So maybe the true fact is the bumper is safe and the spare tire needs to be place somewhere else to pass the test.

Colen,

True, the tire on the back door makes for expensive repairs. The next Disco is slated to have the tire moved inside. But.... it eats up interior space if it's mounted the way a Jeep does in back; if it's in the floor in a well, then you can't put larger tires in there, etc. etc. I like it back there myself, even though a door is expensive to fix, the tire has to absorb some of the impact of a hit from the rear...

A coworker of mine with a brand new 03 CRV just got rear ended by some stupid ricer who was talking on a cell phone and driving way too fast. He hit on his brakes, but still rearended him at probably 10-15mph according to the cops and cost the insurance companies nearly $9k
