Recently I recieved a mailing from Land Rover good for a free pair of shoes if we test drive a new Freelander. I've been seeing plenty of them around, and haven't paid them too much attention. However, my wife and I went and drove one and I have to say that I liked it alot. So much more road friendly than my Disco (better handling, acceleration, brakes, etc.) I can't see spending out $33k on one, but as soon as some used ones come rolling back onto the lot for around 20k we'll have one. Oh well, later.. Rob

33k? Where have you been shopping? My wife's Freelander was 24k.

Yep, Teva shoes, I let the wife get them since I just got a new pair of Vasques. This was the HSE model, pimped out for 32,800 or something like that. It had navigation, etc.. Oh well, I guess I had better go to work since it is already going on 9.. Later.. Rob

I took my girlfriend and she test-drove the Freelander. She's getting the Tevas. They sure do look like nice shoes, but we'll see!

Anyone receive the shoes yet?

I have a brand new Freelander sitting in my driveway. I traded in the DS2 on it. Well...OK...it is just for a few days. The Freeloader is a dealer loaner. Damn thing is nice though. It is an SE and seems to be loaded. I really like the way it drives on the road. Very solid feel and it drives like a bigger rig than it is. Space is an issue though. I can fit more stuff in my wifes Jetta wagon.

Ax - I really do not think that the Freeloader has a good enough approach angle to tackle Fins. There is virtually no clearance on the front end with that low skidplate. Combine that with the compression from IS and I just don't think you can do it without a few scrapes on the front end.

"After a test drive, you'll think Freelander is a shoe-in" is on the front of the bright red mailing..... I need to go down this weekend and drive it just to get the new shoes....

LOL!

Thing is, I've driven a Freelander a bit, since I occasionally will drive David's to run an errand while I'm at the shop.

Thing is, I was tempted to get the wife a Freelander instead of a Subaru, but now that hers might be totalled already, I'll drag her along and get her to drive it and see what she thinks, might go that route instead of finding another silver 5-speed Outback (they're not easy to find, it seems)....

And, I actually have a list of test-questions that I'd like to ask in person while I'm there, regarding Rovers in the near future, so, I'll at least keep the fella entertained..... lol....

And I'll be sure not to take a full 30-minutes of his time, either, I'll just hop in, take a quick spin around the block, asking my questions while in route, so I don't kill his day.... or her, but, I've not seen a female sales guide there since Meg left....

Leslie, hope everyone was alright in the rubasu crash (rubasu = subaru). Anyhow....
Here at Rover Knoxville the sales persons do not ride with you. They take a copy of a drivers license and give you the keys. I test drove a classic Rangie just before I bought the Disco and he told me to take my time and cruise around in it for awhile. I think I was gone in it for a couple of hours. I returned the following week when I saw a Disco for 9k and was going to make sure it drove fine and I was going to buy it. I got there about 15 minutes too late the next morning. Somebody beat me to it. The Rangie was nice but the salesman actually advised me against it since it was a high mileage vehicle. Thus, found my Disco on eBAY. My wife will have a Freelander in due time... that is if I can go a week without spending money on the Disco:)

Wife was fine, the only scratch she had was from a piece of the glass that was on her purse when she was pulling it out of the back seat before they towed it away....

She was on I-81, approaching her exit, which was the site of another accident. Everyone slowed to a crawl and got into the right-hand lane. A fella in a pick-up pulling a cattle trailer was flying up the road and didn't notice that everyone had stopped... hit the Taurus behind her at full speed, which in turn was shoved into the back end of her car. Amazing that no one was really hurt, the folks in the Taurus seemed to be okay, the driver of the pick-up had a cut on his forehead, but he was up walking around. Luckily, our older kids were camping out with the grandparents, and I was home with the baby.

Car is still sitting at the dealership's body-shop, has yet to even be touched other than doing the estimate, and the accident was over a month ago now. The car has less than 2800 miles on it.... it hadn't even been in for its first oil-change!!!! Body-shop estimate is at just under $10,000 in damage.... but, the company is still trying to not total it. I have to say, I'm starting to get pissed over it... the people with the company have been polite, but, it's way past time to have done something, IMHO. I'm thinking about not calling them anymore, and letting an attorney call instead... I'm not big on all the frivolous law-suits that you hear about, but this is starting get ridiculous.

Anyway, like you said, the good thing was, the Subaru did it's job, it protected her.

One of them.....

My little blue one is fine, but the wife's silver one was seriously rear-ended, about a month ago. BIG ouch.

Again, Laura walked away, with only a teensy-weensy scratch from one of the bits of rear-window glass that was covering her purse. Although it REALLY sucks having a NEW car crunched, I have to say that I'm still glad I had bought it, because if she had been in the Aspire, I SERIOUSLY doubt that it would have had as good an outcome.

My thoughts exactly.....

She keeps feeling bad that I had to trade in the Disco to get the Subarus, and that she knows that I'm wanting another Disco pretty bad, so she feels bad that I traded it and she only had if for a few weeks, and now is driving a rental.

But, everytime she says anything like that, I point out that she may very well not be here if we hadn't traded.....

So, missing my Disco or not, I'm very glad I traded it in.....

LOL.....

Actually, I'd like to get her a Freelander, but, they get half the gas mileage, cost $5k more, and the nearest dealer is over 100 miles away.... and, with a Subaru, I might never need to take it to the dealer, lol.... :)

So, she'll be getting another '02 silver Outback Sport.... it's a bit simpler, telling them "replace it", you know? Instead of, "give me X dollars, and I'll find something else"... I'd lose in that proposition, whereas if I say "put us back in exactly what I had", it will (hopefully) go smoother.

Leslie,

I'm just glad to hear that your wife was OK. It also sounds like the kids weren't in the car which is even better. I shudder at the thought of my wife and kids getting hit in her car...

I KNOW the feeling, all too well now.... Laura was supposed to have had Abby, our 5 mo. old, with her in the car, and decided to leave her at home with me at the last second. If she had been on the way back instead of still heading to the campground, our kids would have been in the car with her.

Thing was, she was at her exit, another 30 seconds, and she would have not been on the interstate....

The Subie held up well.... we will definitely be getting another one to replace this one, even if it requires sticking the insurance folks with fire-pokers.... :)

It's really amazing, the only injury she had was a small glass cut from pulling her pocket-book out of the back of the car afterwards.

Now, Laura's sister, had previous neck issues, which this accident has aggravated.... but the insurance company has at least been working with her very well, and the chiropractor has evidentally worked magic on her, she says... and, we've not signed off on anything yet, we're still keeping all options open in case Laura has any issues come up that haven't been apparent yet, but it still seems like she's fine (no, we're not trying to bilk the company, I've known of several people who didn't have problems from being involved in a wreck not show up for several months, so, we're just being cautious).

So, it looks like, if they'll fully replace her car, then we'll be set.... she'll be a bit heart-broken still, since that was her FIRST new car ever, but, it's still a car, and it did its job well.

Hello Leslie, stopped by and chatted with Keith and mentioned that I was glad that the red Disco had gotten a good home while I was up there on Friday. I really think Keith thinks I have a problem b/c I stop in there about every two weeks and have absolutely nothing to stop in for. I'm always asking about something, but I never buy anything from him. He must think I'm a shmuck. When is your Series going to be up and running? Or when can you steal your wife's Disco for a weekend? I'd like to meet ya sometime.. Peace.. RS

We'll be at MAR at least; I *hope* to have the Series running again by then, but we'll at least be in the wife's Disco.

I don't know if I'll be able to wrench her red truck from her, though.... she's fallen in love with it pretty hard..... lol......

We'll see...... I'm patient.... :)

Sometime, tho', I'll at least get down to K-town, and I'll ring ya or something.... when you've got 3 kids, though, it's always a matter of finding the time.... lol....

I bought a 2002 on Friday. I absolutely love it. The only problems so far are that the sub-woofer is not working & that it is pulling to the right a little bit. I'm taking it back this week to have that fixed. It's an awesome car otherwise.

It pratically takes care of itself - when the first 3000 miles are put on it, you need to give it an oil change. Then, it will not need another oil change for 12000 miles!! It continues to be every 12000 miles, unless you go off-roading in it, but even then you only need to change the oil every 6000 miles or so.

It was made to run on 87 octane, so you do not need to fork out the extra cash for more expensive gas!

It was also made to handle snow & it is the best & safest kind of Landrover to drive in the snow. It also has a hill-decent control, etc... etc...

I'm happy! :)

"best and safest LR to drive in the snow."

wouldn't be too sure about that. Freelanders are pretty light and only come stock with average (at best) tires. i wouldn't expect to be blazing through snow drifts anytime this winter.

So there! :p

Allie You will soon find out how good it is in the snow, pending on what part of the country you are in. As for the Best & safest I bet you can go to any SUV MFGR and they will say that about thier cute-ute. But as long as you believe it "what's the harm" It sounds to me that they told you what you wanted to hear. Now if that statement was made about a Volvo AWD XC then I would be more likly to believe.
Congrats on your new toy.

I think that is a fair statement. Of course the laws of physics still apply, so even if the Freelander has traction control, ETC and so on, you still can't drive in the snow as if you were driving on dry pavement. You are only connected to the ground by only 4 small patches of rubber, after all. But that is the case with every car out there, people tend to forget that.

Congratulations and good luck with your new Freelander, Allie. Don't forget to send some pictures to Ho.... My wife loves her new Freelander as well, she got hers in March, and it has been running fine so far.

Thanks Axel! I will send in pics soon! I'm glad that your wife is having fun with hers! It's such a fun car!

My husband wants to give me his disco for my Freelander - it's not gonna happen!! :)

MTB - I live in Atlanta, I'm not too worried about the snow, I was just stating what they told me when we were talking AFTER I had already bought the car, they were also telling me about the awesome alarm system & other goodies. They had no reason to make anything up.

Thanks for the congrats anyway.

Allie, we are in New Jersey, so snow is a little more of an issue for us. But I think the Freelander will do well in the winter, too. And honestly, I think it will do better than my Disco, simply because it is smaller and lighter. Of course in the end, just like driving off road, it ultimatly comes down to the driver.

Yes, my wife is really happy with her Freelander. And I must admit, if we are going on a road only trip somewhere, I prefer driving the Frelander. It handles so much better on the road than my lifted, heavy slow ass boat of a Disco. Off road is another story. But of course it isn't really fair to compare the off road capability of a stock Freelander to a modified Disco... :)

Allie It looks like the same old salesman BS. I am glad to hear it was after the purchase and not before. I wish my salesman would have said that to me when I bought my Disco in 98. I always like laughing at them :) but in my case I think after 5min. he knew that I knew more about them than he did.
I was not trying to burst your bubble, Just hate salesman that BS. Enjoy your toy.:)

Yup, the month old HSE is sure a nice change for scooting around town and down the highway. I think we'll keep the Disco & the 109 for playing in the mud though.

Oh, and yes the radio has died and is apparently unavailable. Any thoughts from the group?

Hmmm, I must be a lucky one. Mine now has 11K miles on it, I've had it off road, added crap all over it (bull bar, side bars, roof rack, 6 hellas and 2 work lamps, rear muffler protection, lamp guards, waterproof seat covers, dog guard, and stickers) and I have had no problems at all. Maybe the less civilized it is the better it acts, you know kind of a real rover wannabe.. It just keeps on truckin' making 21 mpg on the hwy.

Wow, talk about service....but not from LRNA :(

I got a call and an e-mail from Becker N.A. and they told me that the "reset" procedure for the HSE radio is to press the #1, #3 and "TP" buttons all at the same time - with the vehicle running - and the darned radio came right on. It doesn't know which way North is yet, but I'll give it a chance.

Still no word from LRNA and the local dealer didn't know this reset magic!

I didn't buy a Freelander.... they gave me a pair of Tevas for test-driving one. :) And, I actually didn't drive one, I just went in the door, they filled out the form and faxed it for me w/o needing to actually drive one, since I had driven David's a bit.

Allie,
I went to the dealership on a Saturday, would have been the last weekend in July, maybe the weekend before.... they arrived a week ago. Not too bad, especially for free.... :)

Re: the Freelander in snow, while I haven't driven one in the snow, I've slogged many, many miles in the Disco in lots of snow - over 85 feet of snowfall in the last two years. I'd have to say there is no way the Freelander will go like the Disco will. Less ground clearance for starters - we received around 7 feet in three days this winter. I drove down to my shop, with snow coming over the hood, so much snow that I had to crawl out the window as I couldn't open the door. The Disco was a tank, I pulled out so many cars I finally broke my WalMart strap and got to buy the super nice EE tow strap (well worth the money BTW). So, not to start a war here, but I'd put a Disco up against any other SUV in the snow, on-road that is, as I haven't been off-road on the snow, we just get too much of it to even try:-( Also, being from the East Coast, the snow here in Colorado is light and fluffy, much unlike the wet and heavy snows of the Mid-Atlantic region, so keep that in mind. There's no way the Disco would go with hood-deep snow that was wet and heavy. Well, it would go, just not sure how far, or how much damage (grill, lights, radiator, etc.) might be done.

I had an '03 Freelander loaner for two days, drove over the Colorado passes at 12,000 feet elevation without too much effort. The CommandShift feature was cool, and it was fun to drive a (fairly) high-revving engine and IS on some twisting roads. However, over washboard sections and potholes I felt like I was getting vibrated to death. I thought the interior was even "quirkier" then the Disco, but after a couple of hours, all the controls seemed logical. Except the hood release, which is on the passenger side (guess that's one LHD vs RHD option they didn't feel necessary to change). And, believe it or not, my dealership has provided good service on my Disco - that's one of the biggest reasons I'd buy another Rover. That and the fact that when I turned it in, the SE3 had just been delivered and was on the showroom floor with the top off, rack on. My wife and kids went nuts. Yeah, I liked it too. Kinda like my mid-life crisis - a 2 door with two kids and serious snow country isn't too practical, but damn it's cheaper than my dream car (Porsche 911) and a lot more practical. I'll own one as soon as some lease returns, or LR Certified used ones show up in a year or two.

I think LR has a great product in the Freelander and I can't wait to get one, but unfortunately, I have to:-)

I test drove the Freelander recently. I thought it was great. I also liked the 12,000 mile maintenance schedule.
