For all you Freelander owners, I just recieved a Summer 2002 flyer from dap-inc.com and they have a 2" lift kit for the Freelander for $359.95. Doesn't say who makes it or give any details.
I don't have a Freelander but I thought you all might have some interest in a lift kit. |

POS,
I agree with Robert, it's not a POS. Sure it's different than all of the other Rovers that have come before it, (IFS/IRS, no low range, etc) but it's not meant to be a serious off-roader like the others. For what it is, and for who it's designed for, the soft-roader demographic, the Freelander is spot-on and a good vehicle.
IMO- If it makes money for the company and allows them to continue making lower profit margin high image items like the Defender, then it can't be all bad.

how many product recalls have happened on this car?
there is a guy from austrailia that posted his experience with service as well as the truck..
dare i say the jeep liberty is built better..
i never mentioned anything about its off road ability. that has nothing to do with it beind a POS or not..
i tested one at the dealer the other day for shits and giggles..total POS..and how about that depreciation curve....as if buying a brand new vehicle wasn't enough.. |

So you're name is POS and you are calling a Rover a POS? Kind of ridiculous. There is a guy here in the U.S. that has a web page dedicated to how much the Range Rover he has owned sucks. A lemon can happen to any manufacturer on any make of car in my opinion. I would say you probably see less Toyotas in that catagory though. I had a new 97' Honda Prelude for 65k when the trannny went out. New the car was almost 25k, two years and 65k later 12k. So, you see that it is not just Rovers that have problems with falling apart and depreciating.. I still can't believe you post as a POS. |

Maybe email Dap. They have a Freelander on their main page. That might have the lift.
As an aside, POS is an idiot. No reason to call any car a POS in front of other owners on their board. Keep to your own interests unless you have something constructive to add. |

I have owned 4 cars that have had serious problems & not one of them was a LR. They were--
A pontiac firebird (yeah, it's so lame, but I was young & I had no money), VW Golf, Dodge Neon & a Ford pick-um-up truck. |

I have a Freelander S and I love it. I have used it off-road in a muddy, freshly cleared of trees area and it did extremely well. It even has a scar or 2 to prove it. I have, however had several bad experiences with my dealer. They are absolutely horrible and have no idea of what good customer service is. Isn't that the reason Rover/Land Rover and many other British brands failed in the US years ago? Hmmmm!
On a side note, I am looking for a set of foglamps for my car. The single ones that fit in the lower front valance, not the double pods that fit up higher. Some of the dealers in the US have them but they are close to $300. Does anyone know of a cheaper place? Thanks. |

Complain about your dealer to LRNA. Give them a poor rating on any telephone survey they have after a visit. Find another, there are some really good ones out there. (where are you located?)
The Freelander has had some problems, but it's no different to most vehicles, except maybe Toyota. The dealer problem was only one of the reasons British cars failed here. They are too small, generally unreliable and were plain too look at, compared to the 'glizty' USA produced ones. |

I am near Philadelphia. I have 4 dealers within 25 miles. The one that I bought from is about 5 miles away. I have gotten a call about dealer service from LRNA and I really went into detail about the problems that I have had. Not that anything will happen as a result. I do know the dealer rep though, I'm holding that card til later. |

I just purchased a Freelander the other day. As a matter of fact I traded my '97 Discovery in on it. I am very lucky I guess because my dealer (L.R. Fort Worth) has been wonderful. I will not begin to tell you that the Freelander compares to the Disco off road but the same is true concerning the Disco to the Freelander on road, where the truck spends 90+% of the time.
POS is a jackass by the way and probaly drives a 1975 Chevy Impala. |

Just a heads up, I've purchased the lift for the so-called POS (that has done quite well on the trails of GWNF by the way)...I hope to be installing with another Freelander owner. We are sure to have plenty of pics of the install to post. |

Any independent shop, preferably one that has a good reputation and specializes is suspension. Be aware that your dealer will probably throw a fit and void some of your warranty if they refused to install it for you. |

Stay away from those DAP kits. Look what happened to the lifted Freeloader at MAR. $8000 damage when the kit caused a CV to fail due to overarticulation. Will DAP pay? No way. Will LRNA cop it under warranty? No way. Was the owner a sucker? Sure. |

Up untill the events leading to and following the damage I loved the Freelander, the LR Community, and LR....Several things have changed since then.
I would post more details on the damage, but it wouldn't be prudent for me to do so at this time. Once it is you can be sure the full story will be out there.... |

Lifted-
I am sorry you had a bad experience with LR and especially the LR community. You should have been supported not shunned (if that was your experience). Oddly some people just can't see where the Freelander fits in and maybe never will . Personally I have come to the conclusion it's a great addition to the line-up of LR's and will only do better every year, that's my hope. In ending I too was a nay-sayer at first but admit I was wrong. Good luck.

The Freelander is a great little car, we bought one last spring. It is my wifes car, and it sees no off road duty. It is a great road car, and I prefer it over my lifted Disco for road trips. There have been no probems to speak of either. It had a leaky cam seal when we got it, which the dealer took care of, and when they were undrneath doing that, they also noticed an incorrectly installed CV boot. This was right after the Freelander was introduced, so they didn't have the CV boot in stock at the time. The dealer ordered it, and told us it was fine to drive until the boot came in. When it did arrive a couple of weeks later, they replaced the boot, and the entire CV and axle assembly just to be on the safe side. That was probably overkill, but I have a good relationship with my dealer (Land Rover Woodbridge), and they wanted to be sure that there would be no problems down the road.
Since then, there have been no problems whatsoever, except for an emission related recall which will be adressed at the next service. The recall is related to wiring in one of the sensors, no big deal.
The Freelander is not a POS by any stretch of the imagination. It does not come close to the Disco in off road capability, but that is not what it was designed for. Where it shines is on road, where it will outperform my Disco any day. |

The issue here isn't that anyone takes delight in anyones misfortune. I think what people have a problem with is that someone spends a fair amount of cash on modifying their truck, then cries foul and have the balls to ask for donations to pay for repairs when they break it. We all know that when we modify our trucks, the risk of breaking something increases. If you are not prepared to accept that risk, don't make modifications. I feel bad that the owner of the lifted Freelander ended up with a huge repair bill, but hey, shit happens. The old saying of learning how to walk before you try to run also applies. Why was the Freelander lifted in the first place, for the coolness factor? Was any research done on how this lift would affect the rest of the drivetrain? Did the owner look underneath to see what could happen if a cv joint would break and the driveshaft started spinning freely? Was he prepared to deal with the potential repair costs before he decided to look cool and take his brand new truck on the trail? Obviously not, since he is now begging for money. And why should the rest of the Land Rover community pay for his mistakes? That's just absurd. If you wanna play, you have to be prepared to deal with the consequenses. Shit happens, deal with it. |

Actually I apologize for my comments guys. I've just gotten furious lately over some of the negative things that have been said about the guy who ruined the CV joint at the 02 MAR. My biggest beef, are the ones that are not only completely negative about this situation, but are actually taking glory in the fact that this happened. Bad things happen to everyone, and no matter how foolish someone might have been, it's still not right to take glory in something so negative. You don't have to donate if you don't want to, but don't bash the guy for trying to do the best that he can in a crappy situation. That situation has probably taught many of us valuable lessons. It is probably unwise to install a relatively new component which probably has not seen much time in the market, or maybe even much R&D. However due to the fact that there really arn't any issues with people busting CV joints, I believe that it may have been due to a weak joint, or possible an issue with the lift kit itself. Because of this, we really don't know yet what is to blame, unless we start seeing more CV joints failing in such a way. Brian and Steve have done one thing, and that is that they have proven that the Freelander is more capable than anyone could have initially guessed. Will it climb the highest rocks in the Rubicon? No, but it's a definate treat for someone who daily drives, and likes to do some "casual" offroading once in a while. Anyway, i've gone off the point. My apologies for the comment above to you Kyle. Like I said, my biggest beef are against people who are gloating in someone's misfortunes. If you don't donate, fine but that's pretty crappy when someone shoves someone's misfortune into their face. |

The guy lifted his Freelander and it broke. I feel bad for him; I've had things break too and wouldn't wish that misfortune on anyone. But when you try to assign the culpability to someone other than yourself, there's a problem.
I have more respect for the guy standing on the exit ramp with a cardboard sign that says "Need munny for beer" than for some guy begging through his computer keyboard. Does the anonymity that the internet offers preclude all feelings of shame? |

Yes, but what happens when someone reaches such a low point in their life, that they need assistence to lift themselves from the abyss? I'm pretty sure that this person is not proud to be doing this, but is doing it as a last resort. $8k is a hefty repair bill, especially for a chain reaction of events caused by a bad CV joint, or caused by a bad design lift kit. Nobody anticipated such a thing would happen, and sometimes you reach a point where you have no choice but to ask for assistence. |

Bottom line is that I have this huge repair bill for the car and I need $10,000 to pay it off. All I need is $1 from 10,000 people, or $2 from 5,000 people, or $5 from 2,000 people - you get the picture. So if you have an extra buck or two, please send it my way! Together, we can get the car back on the road and healthy again
all I need is a buck from a couple hundred thousand people & my house is paid off. Together we can get rid of this pesky mortgage.
Being a Land Rover I was under the impression that the car could handle the mud, boy was I wrong. The result is a close to $10,000 repair bill (new transmission, axle, and much more)
Nowhere on that site do I see any mention of modifications to his Rover. So it was the mud's fault? There are vendors out there selling 36" tires. If I put them on my truck and break an axle, who is responsible? Land Rover? Michelin? Certainly not I.....

I don't expect to get the $9000 to completly cover the cost of the repairs, but I felt that the Freelander community was more of just that, a community. We look out for each other. If it wasn't for this site and others I could see my self hating LR's forever (especially if all I read was DiscoWeb), but I don't. I have never experienced such a community of enthusiasts in my short life.
If you want to help out, help out. If not, and you think I am a dumb ass, well that's your right too...If the world will help a young lady get out of $20K+ debt from stupid spending, what does it hurt to see if some fellow LR owners want to help out and keep the community growing, positive, supportive, etc. If all I get is the $82 I have received to date, I will be forever grateful.
There is nothing wrong in asking for help when you are in need.

Anyway, you are missing the point. It's not about being delighted about someones misfortune, nor is it about picking on Freelanders. I own a Freelander myself, and love it. A also have a Disco, and love that, too. But that's besides the point. This is about the great American tradition of exposing misinformation. If you look at the "Save Darby" website, you get the impression that poor Darby is locked up at the Evil Dealer Dungeon waiting for some knight in shining armor to come up with the cash to save him, while in fact Darby is home safe and sound, with the repair bill paid. The owner now has a big credit card bill to pay off, but who doesn't?
What do you think will get more sympathy from people; "Help me save my car" or "Help me pay off my credit card"? You don't see the problem here? |

Will, you need to cut this guy some slack. He just emailed me his life story and it is quite sad.
Basically his mom was a waitress at a truck stop, he was concieved in the cab of a truck parked out back. His mom later found out that the guy was her long lost cousin and high on cocaine at the time so he was destined from the start to be no smarter than your average street sign. Around the time he turned seven his mom and her current boyfriend Cletus started making payments on a nice double-wide with only two holes in the roof. Unfortunatly Cletus soon ran away with a Wal*Mart greeter, it seems he had a thing for older women.
In order to keep up the payments she had to keep a boyfriend around almost all the time, but they didn't seem to last long. The cops took Jerry away after the incident with the BBQ pit, Billy spent all his money on crack so his mom kicked him out, Frank died in an alcohol induced hunting accident, and Travis had a bet with his friends that he could ramp over the drawbridge.
One day his mom found someone that she really liked, his name was Will and he ran register 7 at the K-mart. Will only drank whole bottles of Wild Turkey every other day and he had the biggest conferate flag flying from the back of his truck that his mom had ever seen so she thought he was a keeper and when Will proposed to her after she was done giving him head in the McDonalds drive through she wiped the drool from her mouth, smiled real big so he could see her three good teeth and said "yes". Will didn't have a ring so they went down to the K-mart to pick one out, there was a lot of arguing with the manager over why the employee discount couldn't be used in the vending machines up front but eventually they got the ring and were married three days later.
Everything was going great untill a months later Will began developing a most unusual fetish for little boys, he started creeping into our little friend's room once a week and having his way with him. Eventually this started happening more and more untill it was a nightly occurance. When he was 12 he decided that he had had enough, he grabed his can of Skoal and snuck out the window he didn't know where he was going but he wasn't going back to the double wide ever again.
He made his way around the country working many crappy jobs but eventually he got to Alabama where he got a job as a stock boy at Wal*Mart, he was offered better pay at K-mart but that reminded him to much of his stepdad so he didn't take it. He began climbing his way up the Wal*Mart ladder, soon he was head stock boy, next he was a cashier, and one day he was given the possition he still holds today, manager of the sporting goods department.
Yep, he had beat all the odds and become a productive member of society, he now rents a nice single wide in "God's Country Trailer Park" and drives a rusted out '87 F150. For the most part he is a real sucess story but he still gets violent everytime he hears the name "Will".
---So you see Will it's not your fault, you just remind him of his past. Now whoever you are you can't go through life getting pissed at every person named Will just because they remind you of your stepfather, whenever you have those urges you need to say to yourself: "I WILL NOT BE A VICTIM!!!!" Come on say it with me: "I WILL NOT BE A VICTIM!!!!!" Good, now keep repeating it to yourself. |

To mock people that have difficult jobs and struggle to make a living to support their families is really in bad taste. Ron,
Look at how the shafts come out of the trannie... Once you add a lift, instead of coming more or less straight out, they are coming down. Look at how the IFS lift works, it migrates the whole end down, so that the shocks aren't at their limit in normal position, retaining their articulation. When it then articulates downward, the shaft is dropped even further. Look at the end of the shaft in the trannie... it's on 3 bearings, and when that's levered down, you can actually pop one of them out.
Don't get me wrong, I like the Freelander, it's a LOT better than its lookalike CRV, et al, but it can't take a lift.
