Sorry, dealer needs to reset it with T4 or Testbook.

The service engine soon light may go off after a few days (if it was a single fault that did not recur) but it will still be in the computer.

You may not need to go to your dealer, but you will need to go someplace with the ability to read and reset the onboard computers.

Even if the light does go out you should consider getting someone to read the code for you and tell you why it was coming on...

The service engine light is tripped by milage. The Testbook or similar is required to put out the light.
Check engine light comes on when there is an engine malfunction. The engine ecu stores that code.

Sorry, but have to disagree. The 'service engine soon' light can be tripped by the computer throwing an error code. At least on my '01 HSE.

YMMV!

Out of curiousity, I checked the owner's manuals for the different model years. It seems that from 95-99 models the service engine soon light is tripped at a certain mileage and is for the dealer to check the emission system and reset the light. From 2000 and up the manual says that "if an engine operation or emissions problem is registered by the engine control module when the vehicle is being oprerated, the service engine soon indicator will illuminate.

So you all are both right, just depends on what MY RR you have.

Yep, I hadn't realized there was a changeover - probably with the onset of the Bosch engine management system it looks like.

Land Rover Cary just replaced my Mass Air Flow Sensor due to the Service Engine Soon light being on.

To clarify the "engine light" situation:

1987-1999 Rovers using 14cu/x and GEMS engine management have "check engine (orange)" and "service engine (red)" warning lights.

In those vehicles the check engine light comes on to tell you that the computer has detected an abnormal sensor reading, or that running conditions are out-of-normal-range.

The red service engine light comes on about every 52,000 miles to tell you to perform the Federally mandated emission service (test o2 sensors, clean breather system, clean throttle body, check catalysts).

Beginning in 1999 with the Bosch emgine management system the timed reminder was omitted. From that date forward there is only one light. When it comes on the computer is telling you it has detected a problem.

From 1995 to date, a blinking check engine light means you have a serious problem and the truck should not be driven any more than necessary to obtain service.

On newer vehicles the check engine light will go off if the problem it was announcing disappears. For example, you can put the light on by driving with a loose gas cap. Replace the cap and the light will go out a day or so later.

The "service engine" reminders on Disco I and Classic are controlled by a little timer that is owner-resettable. New Range Rover service engine lights can only be cleared by the specialist test systems.
