Picked up a 91 RR and noticed that, at times, I was getting a severe front end shake after hitting a bounce or bump in the 60+ MPH range. Nothing uncontrollable, but violent enough to want to pull over. Happened 3x, smooths out as you slow down. Second...looks like a rear wheel/axle seal is going...is this the same procedure as my 99 Disco I to replace. |

For the shake check all steering bushes, damper, as these are relatively easy. Then check your swivel preload. But also make sure there are no loose bolts or broken components simply by THOUROUGHLY having a look at everything from all angles. |

Quentin, How do you check the swivel preload? I have been working on my front end for about a year and still have the wander/shakes. |

The shakes are common. Swivel preload and tire balance usually fixes it, but wheel bearings, ball joints, bushings, shocks are factor in. To test swivel preload remove wheel and ball joints from swivel housing. Use fish scale (test accuracy) attached to one ball joint hole and pull. Should read 12-15 lbs breakaway resistance with entire hub assembled or 3 lbs with just the swivel housing attached. Mine had no resistance when I had the problem. A common Pep Boys smallish ball joint popper thing works great (the one that looks like an M with a bolt down the middle) to remove the ball joints. |

I have now finally found out what was causing the wobble on my 110. After fitting new bearings, steering damper all I can say is CHECK THE TIE-ROD between PAS box and steering link, mine had cracked by one of the boltholes fitting to the PAS box. It wasnt easy to spot but get someone to wobble the steering whilst you look. |

If you have a very high mileage vehicle then chances are your swivel preload is out of spec. Untill you replace all swivel housing bearings, go ahead and remove four shims from the top of each housing. This should get you close to the specs. You'll have to remove the ABS sensor, top swivel pin in order to get access. Another advantage of doing this procedure is the elimination/reduction of the famous "death wobbles". |

Had the same issue with my Disco...the steering fluid resevoir box was leaking on the top Panhard Polybush for the past 4 years, and that bush was DEAD. Replaced it and 80% of the shaking was gone. Other 20% is "ipso facto" due to the 35" Simex |

heya seth, 35 as in "inches", Simex is a tire (that kicks much butt). Drive shaft (for the front of your rig, i assume as the rear is usually ok with 3+) is done a few ways; check into Tom Woods. or get a DII shaft & a plasma cutter;) as for the poly bushes... not worth the dough. stay with the stock junk. its cheaper and lasts just as long. welcome to the club |
