A 95 RRC would have a Borg Warner transfer case with viscous coupling - not a manually lockable center diff. Last RRC with the LT230 T-case was 1989 I think. Yes - traction control is an early version of what is now available - not as sophisticated or effective as new stuff obviously. Bill |

1988 was last MY for LT230 in US RRs. 1989 started the B-W case.

I am a bit ignorant about the viscious coupling's effectivness compared to say a Disco with lockable CDL - could someone shed some light on that comparo - cheers. |

depends upon what you're doing - always seems that way doesn't it? we have frt/rear ARB lockers on our RR and the B-W case. with both locked and on a climb up a rock ledge, you can feel/see that the front just isn't getting its share of the power. we're putting in a LT230 to maximize the lockers in this situation. now cruising on snow covered roads, open diffs, the B-W is really cool. the power goes front to rear as needed and driving is really nice. so, choose your poison. The RRC viscous is pretty stiff, but there is nothing like a locked diff going up a steep graveled hill off road. The ETC is rear axle only on the RRC. Jaime, are you putting the LT230 yourself? Please post some details about your experience. I am definately dumping the BW soonish. |

Geoff, ECR will be doing the work on the upgrade along with some other items on my newly acquired '94RR. Due to an accident that you might have read about on this site, my '93RR was totalled so we're going to strip it as much as possible to build up the '94. Good thing is the 4.6 was undamaged along with a bunch of other parts such as rock sliders, rear bumber, winch, etc. which we'll re-use on the '94. Should be an interesting project as there are many other goodies planned. Jaime |

Jaime How did you get the insurance company to allow you to keep your wrecked truck?? I too have about a million dollars tied up in a RR, and would not like to loose it if someone totals it. Randall

Randall, in OK as well as my home State of PA, the owner has first right to purchasing the salvage value. in this case it was U$2,500 for the '93RR, which given the cost of just the RPI 4.6, was a "good" deal. my guess is that is how it works in most States, yet, only know 2 for sure. Jaime |

in OK, the salvage value is a % of what was paid for the loss and verified by talking with various salvage yards. I was/am quite happy with how everything ended - except of course the money lost in body refurb and paint. Jaime |

The blue one I have now. Backed it off a 20 ledge in Sedona. After dragging it out of the ravine with the help of a John Deere and a Toyota Landcruiser we righted it, pulled the plugs to clean them out and started it up! Drove it home to San Diego w/ no problems. Had to replace the rear tailgate and drivers door, the rest was taken care of at 1 Day Paint and Body (and some Bondo). You should have seen Behr's face when I pulled up! |

The viscous coupling and ETC on the P38's work quite well. It allows one to turn full lock on the top of slik rock for instance in Moab and still get plenty of torque to the respective drive shaft that has the wheels with the most traction. The only thing that is strange about the viscous coupled t-case is you sometimes need to give here a bit more throttle so as to warm up the silicon fluid when the climb requires a bit more torque delivery to the wheels and tires with the bite which is usually the rear when climbing a steep face for instance. The interesting thing I learned in Moab this year is the front will chirp quite a bit as the weight transfer comes on with the climb up a rock face. There was however one spot where the incline was quite steep and the front tires were screaming away and the back were just sitting there. I backed off the throttle and repositioned the RR and attempted the incline were it was a bit different as the humps related to wheel base. Although I think if I had reved her up a bit more the torque converter and the viscous coupling would have delivered a nice gradual torque increase were the RR would have been propelled up the incline. It is just that its 750 miles home from Moab. |
