My OEM Range Rover upper tailgate is about to fall apart. Looking for personal experiences on the replacement aluminum frames. Also where they can be bought.

I am in the same boat. Mine is literally falling apart to where I try to not use it. This site has helped me with my search for a new one and I hope to get one through GBR:

As I understand from others a new rubber seal at the bottom is a good idea and well worth it.

Tim,
I spoke to Bill @ GBR yesterday and he is out of frames till about mid January. I asked him about aluminum frames being flexible and he felt the MDE line was actually stiffer than the factory steel frames since they are of welded one piece construction. Their cost is 399. I'm wondering how the other mfgs frames stack up and their costs.

I did not find many options in the U.S. and Bill has a very good reputation. $399.00 seems great compared to the OEM price from the usual vendors.

How is the glass retained in those GBR frames? I'm assuming that these are just the frames and not complete upper tailgates, yes?

I'm trying to hold out on my original tailgate until spring, but I'm definitely going to need one then. Been looking at Craddocks but really don't want to hassle with getting one from the UK. Getting one from the States is bad enough when you are talking about a piece this big.

someone is selling an alumium gate on ebay and i emailed them earlier this week to see if it's maxidrive gate bill sells or another brand. it turns out the guy said it's made by allmakes. allmakes is well known for making LR replacement parts. Atlantice British is listed as the Contact in the USA. I call them up and they guy there tells me they had it and it didnt come with all the hardware and they were not too happy with it. i told him i have the handle , hinges and struts. everything else i want new and i don't want to put it together.

he says wait until mid january and they will have something new arriving that is suppossed to fit what i want. so thats What i am doing. (and yes we are talking aluminum)

The frames GBR sells mount the window from the inside. You run a bead of silicone or a bead of the black window caulk and press the window into the frame. You then attach brackets to hold the window in place. This part of the installation sounds fairly straight forward.
Rob what brand frame is Atlantic British going to be selling? Is it just the frame or a complete window and about how much?

it will be complete with everything but handle, struts and hinges, but they would not give me further details. i will call back in mid january. my door is in he late stages of decay as the handle is now fallen off. i have budgeted 600 for a complete aluminum frame with new glass and internals.

AB wouldnt tell me price either.

peter i don't know, but i think it is too far gone for that, can't even use it as a sample. i need all new everything, it's all rotten or rusted or corroded with salt.

not to mention i am working on other areas of the truck and don't have time to spend at a shop. i am looking for drop in replacement, 20 minute job, for this one.

Would you guys be interested in making a frame if I took all the measurements?

I'm in the same boat - the '89 has a perfect tailgate, but screwed lock; the 95 has perfect lock on half-rotten tailgate.

I have a GBR sourced maxi drive gate. Just installed. Looks great, included all the replacement hardware,(stainless). I am very pleased. It is more than a twenty minute job. Many people told me I should buy a new gasket. If your careful you shouldn't need it if its decent now.

Just my .02 cents here....from what I've heard from a couple of guys who re-used their tailgate glass.....it was a truly PITA to remove the old glass. Definitely a money saver but not time! It's all relative I guess.

I bought a new upper tailgate for $400 and plan on running a small bead of something around the glass/frame joint. Hopefully this will prevent future water ingress into the frame.

i've been emailing someone from www.britrest.com

i've heard they have a galvanized upper gate.

i exchanged emails and found out they no longer carry it but for $499 canadian ($375USD) they offer a powder coated steel frame. it comes with no hardware. so i am not so intertested and powder coating sounds risky.
