I would like to purchase a good skid plate to protect all those vulnerable steering bits. This is a must-have in my opinion, but I'm confused as to which one to get. A search didn't help much. I've seen them from $180-$350... is there any real difference other then some are aluminum and others are steel? Any recommendations? |

If you don't find what you're looking for within budget, do the cheap bastard approach: sleeve the front drag link and the rear tie rod with a thicker tubing. You can move the steering damper to the front by fabbing simple metal pieces. Also, helps to have taller tires and a bit of a suspension lift to get you out of harms way. Ali |

i got a whole kit from atalantic british. included front skid plate, tranmission skid plate, and two diff guards. best price alll around for what your getting. my opinion. . steel will work better it will allow you to skid over as alloy sticks and drags. sort of like a alloy canoe compared to abs, alloy will grab the rocks while in the white water.... |

David - none is better - they are more land anchors than anything else and WILL hang you up if you need to reverse out of something nasty. Better bet is do what Ali said, or purchase aftermarket drag link and track rod (Rovertym, $G, Rockware, etc) Bill |

This topic is a feature in the December LROI. They go over numerous different brands. Although most of the brands are european there are a few that may be possible to obtain here in the U.S. Such brands were Safety Devices and Southdown. Both of which they recommend. I read through them and they say that the Safety Devices and the Southdown guards are the strongest built and most likely to take a hit. But thats their opinion. Hope it helps! |

Cool. I buy LRO at Borders every couple of months ($8/issue!). I'll make sure to get this one. I just saw a thread on relocating the steering stabilizer... I'll have to find that again. Thanks for all the info guys! |

I know of three RRCs who removed their mud shovels (Southdown front axle housing guard). They loved them at the beginning, but as they became better drivers, the loss of ground clearance became an issue to them. |
