Hey all,

My viscous blew today and I am trying to decide whether I should spend the $300 labor to have it replaced with a another viscous or should I use on of these LT-230's I have sitting on my floor? What would be required to do in order to swap in a LT-230? I have a 92 RRC...

Anyones .02 is GREATLY appreciated, she is dead in the drive.. :-(

Are you sure it's the VC? Haven't thought about it in a while; but isn't VC failure indicated by lockup, which causes trans windup and wheel chirping?

You would need a shorter front driveshaft. The LT230 is longer than the BW.

My VC has been locked solid for 3 thousand miles now, it chirps on corners but the transmission is "still" fine...it's no longer a daily driver though.

Randall - how does it wind up the transmission, I know it puts more wear on the front cvs/axles .. i figured it just splits the power 50/50 since it's locked. And the Zf is one tuff mamma jamma right..

I was being a dumb ass driving around for a few weeks without my rear drive shaft in and aparently that's not the coolest thing in the world to do... :P

I was driving it home yesterday and it started vibrating VIOLENTLY when you hit the throttle. My mech. said I blew the VC but he is going to pull the borge and check today...

Anyone think it's something else?

my friends 1990 VC is shot but it is always UNLOCKED.

i think this is a much prefered way to have it fail.

JB

The ZF trans is very stout. Not a hint of problems on mine at 141k. My other car needs a trans overhaul with only 109k.

Let's just say that if any diff is locked on pavement, it puts a lot of stress on the drivetrain. It puts more stress on it when you are off the pavement as well. That's usally no problem as you know, because tires will slip in dirt.

I would avoid driving with a locked diff.

Jason Michaels - Your front shaft alone maybe took too much grunt running solo and might have blown a u-joint or come loose causing vibes. Just give it a good eye balling. Mine did the exact same when I was running just a front shaft bc of blown vc, the front as held on with only 2/4 14mm bolts by the time I though to check it out.

Jason, I have a buddy that has an 89 Parts car. email me if youre interested. (Its the guy that bought your rack). It is very easy to replace and can be done in the car no problem. It took me about 4-5 hours taking my sweet time. Gordo
