Hi Folks,
Just thought I'd ask this question of the RR fans as well as the Disco guys...I'm currently running a '96 Disco SD- manual trans, in silver. Next year I'm going to trade up- I test drove a '99 RR 4.6 HSE (Blenheim Silver, 45k on the clock, $31k) and loved it, but am also looking for other options- BMW X5, or a DII. Any thoughts/suggestions? Mostly on- road, but lots of ice and deep snow in the winter. Don't want to spend more than 30k.
Cheers,
Paul.

Check these site out:

$31k is high, is it a certified pre-owned from the dealer with a warranty? I would get one with a LR warranty if you can, be very aware of the cost to maintain these and adjust you budget like wise. My wife had an X-5 for two years, awsome car on-road but too small, there is no trunk space and the back seating area is small, if you need the space get the RR or DII.

Thanks Alan!
The RR I looked at is at a dealer- check it out- top right. http://www.landroveroregon.com/vehicles/certified/rover.html#
Space is an issue- no kids, but we do have a large Dog and often need space for 4. I am concerned about maintenance costs though- don't want to spend 30k then another 3 a year keeping it running. My D1 has already given my wife cause for concern!
Thanks,
Paul.

You could probably knock the price down a little more. With the certified pre-owned you get at least a 1-year warranty included and you could get another year or two added on, but it will cost you. If maintenance costs are an issue, you might want to consider a DII if it has to be a Rover, but they too are not cheap to maintain as you well know with your current D1. All that said, I love P38 range rovers. The ride, roominess, and genuine off-road ability is awsome.

Hi Guys,
so if I go with a '99-'02 4.6 HSE, which is what I really want, is it better to pay over the odds for a low mile rig? I've seen them for $17k but with over 100k miles on. The rig listed was a sweet ride- saw the H&H but it's too spendy- and black. I love the silver. I have heard the stories about the suspension system- anything else? (I know, I know- it's a rover) but what is the most common problem?
Cheers,
Paul.

I'd go for the Niagra Gray 2000 with 47k miles over the 1999 Silver with 45k miles. The 2000 is priced $1k over the '99, but I'll bet they'll waive the price diff. Benefit of one newer model year outweighs the 2k extra miles. Who knows what they'll do on the price. That Niagra Gray/Smokestone is beautiful, and 50k miles is nothing on a Rover. It's not even broken in yet.

I have to agree with Blue. I have a Viagra Gray 96 and love the color, but its not for everyone. I would not pay more for one with low miles. Hopefully with a higher mile rig, most of the bugs will be worked out. Get as new a model as you can afford, getting an older one with low miles will not help you in the maintanence department. Read rangerovers.net it is very informative and will tell you the most common problems with the P38's.

Thanks for all your imput!
I asked if the price was negotiable- the guy said not. I have read that the '99 and on RRs had a better engine management system. I doubt I'll be able to afford much newer than a 2001. So where is the best place to get one? I prefer a LR dealer but don't want to have to pay over the odds for it. I'd rather not travel too far either- prefer Oregon/Washington.
Cheers,
Paul.

Everything is negotiable. Walk in ready to drop $30k and you'll walk out with your RR. They're not going to lose a sale over $1 or $2k. Buy today, last day of the year......:-)

I hate to say it, but getting one at the dealer is probably the way to go with a later model Range Rover. You will pay more, but you will get one that has been gone through and with a warranty. The dealers usually only sell the cream of the crop used Rovers, you will also usually get great customer service and usually loaner cars if you buy from a LR dealer. You never know what you will get if you buy one of a used car lot. If you do get one from a private party or non-dealer lot, make sure you get one that has been maintained and with all reocords. I would not buy a used rover without any maintanence records, you will be asking for it. As Blue said, negotiate. Be serious about your intentions to buy and be prepared to walk away and stand your ground on pricing, do not pay asking price. You could also ask them to throw in another year of warranty.

Agreed. If you buy a RR off a non-dealer lot, you'll get to know the dealer eventually. The treatment you'll receive as a non-dealer buyer may be far different from the treatment if you buy there. Another 12 months/12k of warranty could well be worth the extra $2k over your $30k price cap.

Okay,
2000 4.6 HSE it is, then- sounds like a plan to me! I'll probably sell my D1 next fall (My wife has an '04 Mini Cooper S on order- I'll have to wait until that arrives) Then I'll go in and waft some greenbacks under the nose of their salesman. Looking forward to it!
Thanks again for the advice,
Cheers,
Paul.

there's a white 2000 hse with 48k miles on ebay item #2450544791 for $26.5k that i have been eyeing. it's from texas but seller has a very good rating and looks like he only sells nicer cars. if everything is as they say it is, it's a great deal and worth a trip over there.

Ivan,
I've looked at rigs on Ebay also- but I really don't want the hassle of having to fly to Texas and drive back. And the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of buying from a LR dealer. Did you see the new style RR on Ebay that closed at Xmas? No reserve, only went up to about 16k! Anyhow, happy new year- drive safe!
Cheers,
Paul.

Paul,

Of course the day I recommend this seller, they get two complaints! On the porsche rennlist.com message board, people offer to check out local cars for sale all the time. Wish that happened here more. That white 2000 rover in similar condition would list for about $32k here in SF. The rig will probably relist for a buy it now price of $26k. Assuming I could bargain down to $30k and get an extended warranty by buying locally, I guess the savings isn't that significant.

I didn't see the xmas auction, but I did see a clean 2003 rover with a buy it now price of $55k end pretty quickly. Good luck finding the right one.

happy new year,
Ivan

Ivan,
I'm planning on getting an '80s 911 Targa as soon as I have the RR paid off! Rennlist is excellent- very informative. I am concerned about the suspension system in the HSE but hopefully I can get one with a decent amount of warranty left. I asked the mechanics at LR Portland if they knew of any problems that model was prone to.
They said nothing...
Thanks again for the advice,
Cheers,
Paul.
