Hi everyone. My viscous coupling is seized and i am in need of a replacement. I am going to stick with the BW at this time and not swap with the LT230. with that being said i found a place in the UK (ashcroft transmissins) that will send me a rebuilt VC for around 450....much cheaper than in the us. Does anyone have any experience with them...or any concerns of a rebuilt vs new VC. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks all...Dan |

I do not see how they could rebuild it. It is a sealed unit. I sourced one used for 100S but it vibrates though the drivetrain when I let off the gas at interstate speeds. At least it works though!! Gordo |

While I haven't used them myself, Ashcroft are a specialist transmission rebuilder and have a very good reputation here in the UK, and I'd trust one of their rebuilds to be as good as the new OEM part. Having said that, with a relatively small price differential the OEM part might bring greater peace of mind. When I needed a new front diff (275 rebuild, 400 non LR part, 700 for LR part) I went for the non-LR one as the garage told me they'd used the company for years (didn't say who) and had never had a problem with their parts). Curious, what does a rebuilt BW unit cost in the states? How about a brand new one? $450 does sound like a lot of dough but if you can get a whole case for $1000 then I'd do that. This way, you get new bearings, and a chain with prolly some sort of a warranty. |

I bought a totally remanufactured BWTC from Ashcrofts. This was an attempt to eliminate front driveshaft vibes. It did reduce the bad vibes; but I am now considering getting a brand new VC just to see if that will reduce the vibes further. The reman TC almost totally eliminated the klunk in the drive train. That $1000 rapidly goes to $1900 when you add core charge, shipping, customs etc. |

If you have a clunk in your drivetrain while turning, before just ordering a viscous coupling, drain the fluid from the transfer case and check for any metal chunks. My VC locked up and caused a clunk in tight turns which turned out to be some gears slipping and breaking down. I got a VC from Ashcroft and put it in but it was too late. When I drained the fluid to replace the VC I got a lot of metal at the bottom of my bucket and I drained the fluid twice after that and still got metal each time. The gears were breaking down and the whole transfer case should have been changed. I ended up trading it in on a Disco. |
