I need all my fluids changed on my 4.0 (Trans, Diffs, etc). Is there any difference between what Land Rover does and someone else (Pep Boys or Ind Shop)? I'm sure this is an extremely silly ? but I honestly don't know. I want to get it done right, I just dont want to waste money.

Do it yourself, save big money and know it was done right. Diffs and transfer case just use a 1/2" drive to unscrew the plugs (unscrew fill plug first). Use a hand pump (pep boys, etc.) and fill till it overflows then plug. Trans, remove drain plug, you will only get about 4-5 quarts, refill through trans dipstick. Trans holds something like 12-13 quarts, so repeat again soon to get more clean fluid in. Oil and filter are just as easy, drain and fill. If you don't want to do it yourself, take it to the dealer or a reputable independent rover shop, I personally would not take it to a lube shop. Don't hesitate to do it yourself, it is real easy and you will learn more about your rover and save money at the same time.

hmmm.. I was wondering about those diff plugs. So it's just the square part of a 1/2" drive.. no socket?

I agree with Alan.. changing them yourself is very easy. I did my oil this weekend and it was ultra easy. Even the filter is easy to get too.

Diffs are easy (I did them on my Toyota) and trans and tcase are easy too. Just make sure you have a good hand pump to fill stuff back up.

Yup just the square part, again make sure you can unscrew the fill plug first, you don't want to drain it and then find out you can't get the fill plug off.

I use the hand pump that you can screw onto the the gallon fluid container cap, about $5. You will need two pumps, one for ATF (borg warner transfer case) and one for the diff gear oil.

Please note that you have a Borg Warner Tcase and it uses ATF. This might be a good time to switch to Mobil 1 synthetics for the engine and diffs.

of interest although not really pertinent is R380 5-speeds also use ATF.

Where To Go For Fluid Changes?

Your driveway.

Change to Synthetics. Save the dough you'd waste at a shop and get synthetics.

As far as the R-380 goes, I've "heard" Rover put in the ATF so they wouldn't get complaints in the N.A. market, pussies that we are. Also "heard" that in Oz, they use 85-90 wt. GEAR OIL, and can get well over 200K [whatever they use as units of distance.]

You have a Rover at ECR? I am an ECR groupe... I think I've read every one of their Porject reports. :-)

Alan,

good to hear from you. amazing we "talk" more on DW than in person! both RRs are up with the Rover Spa as my wife calls ECR and the project has started. I'll call you about the locker situation in person.

David,

ECR does all the major on my Rovers and I've been a client now for close to 10 years. There are a few projects on Mike's site that feature the Green RR and the Blue 109. The White RR project probably will be up in the near future whenever Mike gets time. Also feel its a pretty cool site and a very cool shop.

i have my local jiffy lube dudes trained.


since i myself have changed the fluids and found it too dirty and messy i take it to the local place and then described to them exactly what i want changed and how to do it. after they are done i go out and inspect the work before i leave.

I'm a new Range owner and I dont know much about what's right or wrong with maintaining these things. You hear so many horror stories that it's better safe than sorry.
It's a shame that the dealer charges all that "FU*KIN" money for something you can do yourself. I had a disco series 1 and I changed the fluids on that, and it was fairly easy.
Being that I'm new to the RR's, it has been a tremendous help for me to have all of you on DWEB. You guys are all serious offroaders, and you still take the time for posers like me.

for piece of mind, buy a workshop manual for your RR. like Rob, I have my local Texaco lube shop trained on my RR by taking the appropriate pages with me. they basically just drain and fill by referencing the manual. doing it yourself is great, however, for the cheap labor price and the disposal of the old fluids, having a local lube shop isn't too bad either.

The engine in the 4.0se RR is excactly the same as a D1. In fact most of the running gear in the RR is almost the same as a D1 or D2 except for the tcase, D1/D2 is LT230 and RR is Borg Warner. So if you have done it before in a D1, you should have no problems in the RR. Don't let the fact that it is a RR instead of a D1 scare you into not doing any work yourself because it is basically almost the same.

No problem helping you out, that's what dweb is here for and we all started out the same way. But I sure wish dweb was around a decade ago, could have saved me alot of money.
