I have a 1992 Range Rover Classic that has developed an engine problem. I was driving home and the Rover started losing power (almost to the point of being towed in), but she was able to sputter in.

Once home and in the driveway, the truck will start with no problem but I’ve noticed a very subtle white/grayish smoke coming from the exhaust tail pipe. My first thought was a blown head or gasket, but the oil is clean as is the coolant – so no cross contamination. Also when I place my hand on the exhaust/tail pipe and smell the exhaust, it smells like gasoline – very similar to when my two-stroke runs rich.

I assume there is no quick fix, but is there something that might be wrong other than the head, such as a fuel injection problem to account for the excess fuel mixture (i.e. running rich)? She has been a great truck and don’t have much money for repairs, but would love to be able to keep her on the road. Thanks in advance…

PS…I need new tires – stock are Michelin 205/80-16, I’ve checked and the replacement are expensive and hard to find, is there a similar more standard/cheaper size that will fit in place of the 205/80-16? Also, I have to replace the brakes (rotors & pads) and was going to buy the rebuild kit from Atlantic British for $399 – any cheaper prices out there for OEM kits? I’ve changed my DII’s brakes, is the Range Rover County just as easy?

David -

THe smoke may have been there long before now, but you just noticed it. You did say it is "subtle".
The loss of power and sputtering may be unrelated to the smoke.
If you can, take it to a shop that has the diagnostic tool-Rovacom? There are others, but one is best. It may be painful, but it will save you lots of time chasing false leads.
Then again, it may be something obvious, like a bad plug, plug wire, ground"!" or something that could be loose. Double check all the connections and hoses first. You know that small air hose that goes into the plenum? It branches off the bigger one. Make sure the hole in the brass insert is clean.

Did this just happen suddenly - the loss of power, I mean. It could be a few different things - maybe even bad gas. Is it running OK now or just starts OK now? What happens if you stomp the pedal to the floor? How much smoke - maybe bad o2 sensors if its just running rich? Drive it around the block and tell us what happens.

You may need something as simple as new plug wires and coil wire. My truck seemed to struggle going uphill one time. I felt the wires and could feel a pulse of current through the insulation. Truck ran fine after new plugs and wires. Hopefully its okay to mention ebay. If not strike my post. I saw new rotors and pads for sale within the last week. Good Luck

First, thanks for all the help. As for the Rover, No check engine lights on. The truck has been sitting in the driveway for almost five months now, so I don’t “know what happens when I stomp on the pedal,” but it does start up very easily (warm or cold weather). As far as the “smoke” goes, it’s about the same amount and looks like condensation when you start up a vehicle on a cold New England morning, except it happens in warm and cold weather and does not go away.

Check your fuel pump. I recently had a similar problem with my '92, and it turned out to be the pump. It would start right up and idle great, but wanted to die on the highway. It got so bad that I ended up with a top speed of about 30 MPH on the way home.

Tire sizing and other information can be found at the link below. Also use the D-Web search feature, many discussions are available.

Possibly limp home mode. Possible timing chain snapped some teeth and static timing now way off. Try to rattle your cats and mufflers too to see if collapsed inside and blocking exhaust. Did temp guage climb?

Brakes are relatively easy to do. Do a search and you'll find lots of info.

If you are in Southern California then I've got your tires sitting in my garage! 4 stock 205/80R16 Michelin XPC's and 1 stock Michelin XMS244 (OEM spare). All with 90-95% tread still left. All 5 for $200 or offer. (yes, Dweb will get a cut)
