I have a '95 P38 and now that temps here have reached into the high 20's during the day I noticed a problem. When stopped at idle or moving less than 20 mph or so the Rover blows out cool air instead of hot/warm air. When I start moving along above 20mph or so the air coming out of the vents gradually starts to warm up but never feels as warm as it should be. Then when I come to a traffic light or slow down under 20mph the warm air starts to get cooler and cooler. I for the life of me have no clue why this would be happening or what could be the culprit. I contacted Atlantic Britisha and spoke with Lester but he had never heard of it before. My first thought would be a bad thermostat but I am unsure if a faulty thermostat could affect the system in this manner. *As a note I did experience slight overheating when stuck in wonderful DC traffic on 90+ degree days so it might be time to replace the $90 thermostat anyway. Also on my HVAC controls I no longer have the option of setting the fan speed so I just keep it on Auto which has worked out well. That happened last winter so I doubt it would be causing this issue. Any help would be much appreciated given that temps are going to stick around in the 20's & 30's for a while here. Kinda Chilly in the Rover ;) Thanks, Rk |

Something is happening that is changing the way the HVAC is blending direct outside air with air that is flowing over the heater core. Since it is only happening when the engine is not under load, I would look for a vacuum problem - broken line, etc. Could be totally wrong, I haven't seen this problem before either, but what you describe sounds like a vacuum problem.

Thanks for the input Pugsly. I called Atlantic British again and spoke with Eric who said it was most likly a bad thermostat. I ordered one so we will see if that takes care of the problem. If nothing else the new thermostat will prevent overheating in the summer I hope it fixes the problem though because it is COLD outside. |

Kyle's right, if the coolant is low that could be causing the symptoms you are seeing. I was kinda assuming you had checked the obvious stuff already. |

Kyle you are the MAN!... Turns out a small plastic pipe from the coolant refill tank going to the top of the radiator had a small pin prick hole in it which caused a pool of coolant to form under my battery and a loss of preasure in the system. I got it taped up now, refilled and now she is warming me up like a champ. I will get a replacement pipe tomorrow. This board has always been a life saver for me. Thanks Again Guys! |
