Are you talking about the old General Motors diesel engines or a new style duramax? The old style were reputed to have a ton of torque. Horsepower was weak and they weren't known to be especially reliable.

The 6.2L non-turbo are generally used from I've seen. They will overpower the zf transmission, so most swap in a GM trans too. There is a site from a guy in South Africa that did it with his experience (http://www.landyonline.co.za/techtalk/dv8_conversion_pages/transmission.htm).

I believe that the BMW 6 cyl diesel was an option on the P38's sold in Europe.

I did some wheeling with a guy who had one in a Disco and it seemed like a nice conversion. He bought the adapter plate for the ZF and exhaust manifolds from Samuri in England. He made up his own brackets for the alt. and air cond. comp. but was using a Subaru powersteering pump because of space issues. I looked under the hood and it looked like a nice well planned out conversion to me. He had no problems with the ZF so far. Engine is only 70lbs heavier than a 300tdi
