Is this a DIY Job? I have a 1999 RR leaking oil out of the rocker covers. If so can anyone walk me thru this?

Rob

I'm in Cary. maybe you could come by and I'll look at it.

Do you have the Bosch engine or the Lucas intake? Are you sure it's leaking from the valve cover? One side is real easy to remove. The other may have to remove some of the intake to get the cover off. You need a 12 point, 8mm, 1/4 drive socket. Gasket should be easy to replace once you have the cover off. Requires very little torque on reassembly.

Randall and Dean,

Thanks for the input. I have the 4.6 engine. I had thought the oil pan was leaking and I still think it is but you can see the trace of oil all the way down both rocker covers. I don't have the repair manual for the RR but it looks like you have to remove something to get to the covers. Is that the intake and do you know how I remove that? I have a 96 Disco that I do the work on occasionally but my wife uses the RR so if I have problems I take it to the guys at Rover Club House who are great. They have taken me off roading before and it was a great time.

You should buy a repair manual. it will pay for it's self every time you have a problem like this. Fortunately that leak is probably just a nuisance that can wait for RCH or a DIY fix.

Dean
If only there was some good trails around here.

Guys,

I have the manual for my Disco and it as well as Discoweb has saved me a lot of money. However, I still get a good deal of work done at Rover Club House, and Flying Circus English Cars. I like RCH because the guys are really helpful and realistic and they only work on LR. They might tell you have 6 things wrong with your truck but if I were you I'd only fix one. They really know what they are talking about.
I'd like to be one of the guys on this forum who's like Macgiver fixing their trucks with a paper clip and a bubble gum wrapper. If you have 2 Land Rovers you have to do some of this yourself or you'll go broke.
I'll order the repair manual this week. Thanks guys.

You might first try checking the torque on the valve cover bolts. Mine weren't even hand tight.

Good suggestion Geoff. I'll check that. Do you recall what the Torque setting is?

No, but its probably not more than 8-10Nm (barely past hand tight). I'll have to check the manual later.
