I am looking at a 1990 RRC with 145000 miles. The truck is at a local independant dealer. What things should I look at before buying? Right now the blinkers, drivers window ,driver mirror, dash lights, moon roof and radio due not work. Has new coil and the other electrical thing on the coil bracket. Salesman told me it had OME springs and shocks. He also told me he did not know what that meant. Good for me. I have not climbed under the truck yet to verify what exactly was added. I currently have a 98 disco my wife drives and was looking for a replacement for my 79 Jeep wagoneer. Salesman has not found fuse box to try and fix blinkers. Alternator was replaced and blinkers have not worked since. Salesman also thought the lights did not work until I showed him the light switch. Asking price is $2400 plus my jeep

fuse box is on the front dash to the right of the heater controls , peal back the panel.

check under the footwells for rust. check rear upper gate for rust.

check the whole car for rust.

it's probably going to be rusty :-)

peep www.rangerovers.net for plethora of information. should keep you busy all night.

there if this truck needs some things just keep on walking. i am already a little concerned of the electrical problems.

Thanks, Owner told me I could bring the truck home and tinker with the lights. I will try the fuses first. I have not noticed any rust rear gate is solid but like I said I have not been under the truck yet

I would spend a few bucks and have it checked out by an independent LR mechanic.

Good Luck!

I bought a '90 almost 2 years ago, with the same milage. It was a southern California car, so nor rust. BUT, it needed a rebuilt dizzy, a new cat, repack wheel bearings, all new fluid everywhere, new cassette for cruise control, new a/c hoses, condenser, and new bushings.
I need to see why the heater drooled coolant inside the cab.
It came with OME HD suspension, custom roof rack, almost new Goodrich M/T's,
and no leaks, or electrical problems. I paid 6K.
It then needed a new rocker arm at 165K, but I went ahead and had the motor rebuilt, to above factory specs.
But damn, when running, of all the vehicles I've owned, its my favorite.
Sick I tell ya.

Oh yeah, did you look down the oil filler tube on the valve covers? What color do you see? If it's dark brown/black, the engine has not been cared for. dark bronze/gold - pretty clean and prolly O.K.
If you do get it, drop the oil pan and clean the gunk from the bottom. I didn't do this till I took the engine apart, and always wondered why the oil looked dirty after changing it and putting in new oil.
I had about a 1/4" layer of unknown substance, black, chunky and gooey,

Went back today for a closer look and another test drive. Truck runs down the road good. No rust at all, turn signals had a blown fuse. When I was driving the check engine light came on. I checked the OBD1 and found code 68 (vehicle speed sensor?) The code and light cleared when the battery went dead in my driveway. I had to put the charger on it to get it back to the dealer. Dealer told me he changed the alternator and left one wire off because the new alternator did not have a post for it??? Alternator was purchased at autozone and required the old pulley to be mounted on the new alternator. Also the tach and spedo. do not work dealer said they worked before new alternator. Price has dropped to $2500 with no trade.

Unless the rover spent its entire life in a dry climate, it will have rust.

The tach is run off the alternator. When he left off a wire that was the tach wire. Prolly has the wrong alternator. He big dummy and don't know what he doing. $2500 and no trade? Have it checked out by a Rover mech, sell the Jeep and use that $$ to get everything fixed on the Rover. Yeah, that's the ticket.
Look down the oil filler hole on the valve cover. What color do you see?

I have an 89 RRC, Portifino Red with the Sorrell Brown (tan) Leather interior. It is neither the low option Hunter version or the high option County, that i believe were also available that year:

http://www.ebroadcast.com.au/ecars/LandRover/RR1/ident.html
http://www.eastcoastrover.com/INFORangeRover.html

Five years ago, at about 101k miles, she had the swival balls and interfacing hardware re-done.

I took her over about a year subsequent to that, at about 116k miles. She then had the steering box re-built twice over about a calendar year, then in six months of that, had that leaky steering box replaced, not a drop since.

She gets the AC charged about once a year.

Re-fitted with four Michelin OEM 205/16's about three years ago

Little things:
- Bumper pads, all four, replaced twice (DC street parking by braille)
- turn signal switch on steering column,
- windscreen washer reservoir level sensor,
- window/seat switches needing pulled and ripped down on my dining room table to have the oxides on contacts scraped clean,
- Parking brake lever cable needing pulled up taut,
- Replacement of automatic transmission Indicator display,
- right rear door electronic lock trigger/linkage repair,
- i found a kenwood CD head unit while walking my dog so i bought its replacement face plate and i pulled the Clarion cassette unit and installed the Kenwood, then upgraded the four blown cardboard door speakers with kenwood component spkrs (hid the crossover network behind the upper grille) and i put J "something" "something" two-way 4.0 inchers in back - sweet sound now! i use an iPOD with an iTRIP FM xmitter and cig ltr plug PowerPOD now also.
- Front fog's are cracked but still work,
- going to upgrade the back-up lights with that halogen bulb upgrade:
"Description: HL81140 Halogenization Kit, Incl 2 ea 78165 20W Ba9s and
adapters to replace 2 1156 bulbs
Price: $24.38"
Miscellaneous bulbs for tail lamp, side
markers, fog
lamps, map lamps and city lights at
http://www.rallylights.com/hella/misc_bulbs.asp

i navigate with my GARMIN eTrex Vista handheld GPS using its portable yet stable beanbag base on the dash above the speedo as a heads-up display; its loaded with their MapSource MetroGuide US (and Europe when there) software with routes/waypoints I do on my PC then upload to my "Geeps".

In the past year, now with 152k miles, she's had:

- oil/filter and automatic transmission fluid/filter,
- lube service,

replaced:
- coolant flush, hoses/T-stat and some other coolant hoses for heater to stop the nearly constant low level leaking as shown by the low coolant lamp illuminating after a two inch reservoir top-off weekly,
- shocks/brake pads,
- all belts/wipers,
- steering damper, panhard rod bushings, pittman arm, all tie rod ends (then alignment) to stop a 65+ mph steering wheel +/-15 degree shimmy,
- upper rear tailgate latches
(she's ready for the ALL aluminum upper tail gate from UK very soon),
- alternator, after a three months long subtle bright/dim cycling of all lighting simulteaneously finally showed up as a bright red BATT light then suddenly dead vehicle in rush hour traffic,
- rear windscreen wiper motor, and, last week,
- the $700 (installed) heated windshield replaced for DC safety inspection.

total parts/labor of ALL above work since Dec 1999, about $9000USD, give or take a Grand.

I rescued a 1987 RRC in 1994. It was a R&D vehicle that Eaton Corp tested their supercharger on. I bid $2200 on it at a silent auction and won. If they didn't get over $2000 they were going to give it to a zoo for their lion haitat. It would have ended up with lion shit all over it. I bid on without seeing it and knowing it was a basket case. There was also a clause that said the engine would have to be removed and returned to them. They had already removed the supercharger. When I went to pick it up (with a tow truck) they gave me some other parts their boss said belonged to this RR. A Salisbury rear axle complete drum to drum, A front axle complete diff, swivels, everything, a new exhaust, and a box full of misc. stuff. When I got the thing home I found out it had a Borg Warner t-box, a Detriot locker rear end and a custom built exhaust system on it. I sent their engine back, after I requisitioned some of the good parts, and installed a 3.9L engine. The Range Rover had only 56,000 miles on it. Over the next two years I completely restored everthing on it including rebuild the trans and steering box. Complete paint job. The extra parts they gave me helped fund the restoration. It looked like new and everthing worked like new when I sold it in 1999 with 114,000 miles. It was the best vehicle I ever owned.

John,
From everything I've read, the 89 Hunter was NOT a stripped down version. The '91 Hunter was indeed and had less standard equipment. Just because I don't own one anymore, doesn't mean I can't defend it. :-)

Kelly,
I'd second having a mech look at it. The dealer obviously doesn't know a thing about it. The wheel bearings/CV as well as the BW transfer are things that aren't apparent but can cause larger costs in the future. If you're going to take it off road, make sure the BW actaully funtions as it should.

Thanks everyone, My problem is I live in a small town with no Land Rover mechanics around. The RR was on it's way to Nashville, by someone else interested, to be looked at by a Land Rover mechanic when the alternator went. Dealer towed it back to fix the problem and has not done so yet. I am going to keep my eye on it to see how bad the dealer wants to sell it. He told me that he would probably take it back to the auction. So depending on his investment the price may drop. So for now I am driving the Wagoneer keeping my eyes open for a RRC.

Peter,
thx for clarifying on the Hunter differences between 89 and 91. The Hunter models seem so rare, I'd love to see one. I just got my Rangie back with a brand new heated front windscreen installed. The Disco sII I gave my wife for Christmas is great, but Rangie has so much character.
