Hi Guys,
I've been looking for a 2000/2001 RR and was thinking I'd get the 4.6 as the 4.0 in my D1 isn't quite powerful enough. Then I found a really nice 4.0 SE (http://www.executiveauto.com it's the silver one) but I am wondering if I'd still feel it was under-powered? The salesman said the RR4.0 has more hp than in the D1 and the 4.6 is really only necessary if you want to tow, which I don't- but having driven a 4.6 and really liked the power I am tempted to go with that. I live in Eastern Oregon so I can't run down to the local LR dealer and compare the two. I'm not so concerned about gas milage as it's gonna suck whatever. What do you guys think?
Thanks,
Paul.

Test drive it. The RR4.0 with the Bosch is extremely smooth and even though it has almost the same power rating as a D1 it will suprise you on how smooth the power transfer is compared to a D1. But it sounds like you have your heart set on a 4.6, if thats the case go with the 4.6, you will not be disappointed.

Screw the RR get the 55 Chevy Bel Air!

A bosch 4.0 has plenty of power. I owned a 96 4.0 which was somewhat lacking, but the Bosch trucks are that much different. I just picked up a 2000 Bosch 4.0 SE and its great. I find that a Bosch 4.0 feels almost identical to a pre-99 4.6. That silver truck looks nice, just make sure its not out of warranty by time. IMHO a 4.6 HSE is not worth the premium unless your into making apperances and impressing people.

does anyone know if you can reprogram the Bosch ECU to default into Sport mode?? in sport the 4.0 is almost fast.

Gil,
the silver '00 doesn't have a warranty, which makes me think I'd rather not buy it. I just found another though- a 4.6 HSE with 46k miles, black with tan interior, $29,995. Warranty left and it's certified from a LR dealer. FSH and in excellent condition. Does the 4.6 have a sport mode option, or is that just the 4,0? Oh, and sorry Alan- I would buy a '55 Bel Air, but I already decided that my next rig after the RR will be a Porsche 911. Hopefully an early 80's Targa...
Cheers,
Paul.

All P38 rovers have sport mode, same transmissions. The only problem is that you have to press the sport mode button on everytime you restart, but I believe or read that 2001? and up models stay in whatever mode you last left it in.

get a 4.6 especially if you are going back and forth between the 2. I drove both and the 4.0 is somewhat lacking on power. Ive got a somewhat beefed up 4.6, but the stock 4.6 is still better than the 4.o, no matter if your towing or not. Especially if you dont mind about gas mileage, then get the 4.6 just so youll have the extra power if you need it.

I'll offer another alternative: we have found the Superchip performance chip gives a 4.0 90% of the feel of a 4.6 at a considerably lower cost.

Rovers North is selling the chips. You will need access or a shop with a Testbook or equivalent system to program the ECU after making the change.

If you are speaking of a Bosch car, the chip must be soldered in. For that task I recommend an authorized Bosch service center, and again you need Testbook or equivalent access.

In my column in the RN newsletter for spring 2004 I will be writing about the Superchip setup and the tests we've been doing.

We're off to look at the Black/Tan 4.6 HSE tomorrow...
I'll let you know how it goes!
Cheers,
Paul.

We went and looked. Gorgeous rig, pretty decent price, but the dealer would only give me $4k for my '96 Discovery SD. I'm going to try and sell my D1 locally within the next couple of weeks and fingers crossed the HSE will still be there...
Cheers,
Paul.

Does the 4.0 suffer from shifted liners (meaning a new engine required) like the 4.6?

I've got a 4.6. I wish I'd bought it with an extended warranty (it had no warranty)

My best advice is to find a 2001 4.6 SE... then you aren't paying for the "bling" factor on the HSE... it has the bigger engine, but 16" wheels, no chrome, and no NAV (which was an option on HSE anyway). It's usually thousands cheaper than the HSE & a great value.
I think the 4.0 is on the slow side, and the 4.6 really helps.
