This may be a stupid question but are 3rd members from P38A RR's and D1/RRC's interchangeable?

Also - I am assuming that P38A and D2 thirds are the same (?)

Thanks,
Bill

I talked to Bill at GBR some weeks ago when I ordered a DS for my P38 and he had mentioned that the diffs in the P38 are different than the DII and that LR was using the P38 diffs in the current Defenders. I think he said that the P38 diffs are stronger because of the number of pins? As you can tell, I'm no expert on the subject. Give Bill a call, I'm sure he can tell you.

From what I've seen there are "2-pin" and "4-pin" versions, 4-pin being stronger.

I'm really asking about the third member - not the diff.

ie: will they all bolt up into each others respective housings or not.

Thanks,
Bill

Re the 2-pin and 4-pin diffs, the P38A used 4-pin on rear axle with a 2-pin on the front until the front also gained traction control like the rear.

The diffcase itself is different, the nose is shorter than the classic diff.

Current model Defenders use the same diff on the rear instead of the earlier Salisbur diff.

I just had mine on the P38A rebuilt after breaking the crownwheel teeth.

It will not bolt up. I've had one mistakenly sent to me.

I don't know about the second question.

"What is this third member that you American chappies talk about?"

I had the same question when I first heard the expression - not so long ago. It's not in fact anything to do with kinky sex, and refers to the complete differential housing assembly that bolts off (or on) the axle casing.

Hey if your looking to put in an ARB locker in the P38A you need RD57's They work in both the Traction Controlled (TC) rear and the earlier non TC fronts as well. Bill at GBR is stocking these ready for shipment with 4.1:1 Ring and pinions if your up for some more large tire leverage.
