I'm posting for a friend who has an 88 RR. There is an awful noise coming from somewhere near the front/top of the engine. We changed the belts and the alternator but those weren't the sources. The vehicle runs quietly at idle, and starts wailing very suddenly at about 1800 rpms. The noise stops abruptly once the throttle is let off. I have only heard the noise when the vehicle is revved in park, but my friend says it makes the noise while driving as well. Any suggestions of what to look for would be greatly appreciated. |

Probably tensioner pulley bearing. If not, then try water pump (but since you haven't mentioned leaks I doubt this). |

Try removing the belts and starting it. ONLY briefly as your water pump isnt hooked up! See if it goes away. At least it will point you in the right direction. Gordo |

Run the truck and have one guy rev it, the other can go find the source - sheesh, you dont need to remove the belts...thats a lot of work Id say - unless you are alone. |

I agree with Sean but I was assuming you had already at least had someone rev it up while you listened to it. That seems obvious. I have heard a water pump that blew the bearing and it was LOUD. When mine went it sounded like scraping going on in there. The strange thing with yours is that it doesnt start until 1800rpm. Let us know what you find out. Gordo |
