Solved my coolant loss and foggy windows all in one fell swoop. :-( Though I know it wasn't happening when I bought it, or even a month ago, I now have coolant leaking into the wheel wells. Ugh.

I'm trying to be optimistic that it is just a hose or something and not the heater core. It's not a lot, but it's more then a dribble. This explains the increasing amount of coolant I've had to be topping up under the hood.

The PO said the core was replaced about 4 years ago... it shouldn't be shot.

If it's the core, I think I'll bypass it for the now and fix it later this summer/early fall. Don't want to have her parked during prime offroad season. :-)

So am I being overly optimistic or does coolant in the footwells automatically mean bad heater core?

Its easy for the hose clamps to loosen over time. If so the coolant can work its way inside. Tighten 'em up using a thin long screwdriver.

Does the link that John provided still apply to a Classic? I believe David has an '88 RRC and the link was for a 4.0/4.6 RR.

in case of a RRC see this:

http://www.rangerovers.net/rremedies.htm#heater

I think you can check the heater core if you manage to unscrew one of the lower air ducts (l/h preferred) that directs the air to your feet and illuminate the inside of the heater casing with a torch from through the passengerīs air duct. You might be able to look through the l/h air ductīs opening.
I havenīt tried this but if memory serves (had changed the heater core recently) it could work (perhaps with help of a small mirror).
Coolant drops and stain will tell you about the coreīs condition.

Thanks guys... I've collected all the links and read through everything here on teh subject as well. I'm still hopeful it's not the core, but if it is, I'll be changing it myself this fall. :-)
