Ok I have a 95 RR 4.0 with 42k miles. I want to have the transmission serviced. I called the dealer and they want $360.00. With that service they said they will drop the transmission, change the filter, and flush the transmission fluid (torque converter as well) completely out and replace with new fluid.
I just called a reputable shop that has been reffered many times on dweb, and the person there indicated that they're not familiar with the transmission flush, and what they do is drop the pan, change some o rings & gaskets, and reseal. They also stated that there is only 5 to 6 quarts of fluid replaced in their service. They are charging roughly $200.00 for their service. Which is most beneficial? I'm not a tech, and my knowledge of transmission services is limited. I hope I can be pointed in the right direction. Thanks in advance

you need to change all the fluid in the transmission. so the service needs to have the torque converter drained. it can be drained by the drain screw or with the transmission drain puld out start the engine and run in all the geras pausing a bit in each gear. all the way down to 1st then all the way back up to park. this will remove what is left in the torque, better then not draining it at all.

You don't need to drop the transmission to change the fluid and filter.

A lot of people (like me @ 122K miles) just change the filter and the 5 to 6 quarts, then drain the pan at the next 3 or 4 oil changes. Eventually you change the ATF completely. The filter doesn't need to be changed very often as it is a screen type (instead of felt which can clog). I saw a LR TSB that said to change the filter just once at 30K and fluid changes only thereafter.
