I've been driving a Jeep Cherokee for the last 12 years. I've been thinking of something different. What I want is:
Daily Driver
Off-Road capable (nothing extreme, but the more capable the better)
I have 3 young kids. This vehicle would be for camping trips, day trips, messing around off-road ( Death Valley, etc.)

I see advertised a 92 Range Rover. Said to have 80k miles. 1 owner. Garage kept. No serious flaws or mechanical troubles. Owner asking $6900 obo.

My questions are the standard newbie ones:
What should I expect from a Range Rover, based on the criteria above? Is it big enough, is it strong enough? 3.9L V8 doesn't sound like much engine. What should I look for on this vehicle specifically (any nuances in the 92 year, standard trouble issues, etc.)? And the tough one, what should I pay?

The reason I'm getting rid of the XJ is the family out-grew it. The size of the interior and the horsepower of the inline six ( an engine that I absolutely love, but it can get a little bogged down when loaded with wfe, kids, dog, camping gear). We just bought an Expedition, but hesitate to take it to remote areas. Trying to keep it "the good car". ;o)

the range rover is a very capible car. what to look for is rust! look under the carpets in the rear. look under the carpets in the foot wheels. upper tail gates are prone to corrosion. ask for service records. be wary if non are present. rovers are high matintence but worth the fun that they provide.
check exhaust system for leaks, check braking system. abs light should extinguis by its self once you get it rolling. listen for clunks when taking up drive or reverse. power steering box is prone to leak. check the chassi for rust.
make sure all electrical functions are working. ie heated seats, power sear switches. wiper delay. iam sure that you will find some things here and there about the car that might be a miss. but remember it is over ten years old now.
go and drive as many clasics as you can to get the feel for them. try not to become attached to the first one. also visit www.rangerovers.net for a lot more information on the range rover. hope this helps

also search the archives here as there is much information on this question that will give you a good insight on what to watch out for on a used RR.

as to costs, go to www.lrx.com and get a feel for the prices. also www.bvlr.com.

I'm on my second RR and really like them. however, the interior though is not that big nor is the cargo area in the back. we usually have most of our stuff for camping trips on the roof rack.

if you have the opportunity, check out a long wheelbase (LWB) version. LR added 8" to the frame which increased the back seat room substantially. they were available in 93,94, and 95.

good luck!

Jaime
