OK. Here we go...So I'm driving down the road in my 95 County minding my own business. Suddenly I hear a loud bang come from the rear of the vehicle. I do a quick head turn and discover that the glass in my lift gate was shattered. I pull the vehicle over to investigate ready to murder who ever was responsible(rock, gun, whatever). I check it out and there is no sign of impact. The inside layer was shattered not the outside. Just when I thought that my Land Rovers couldn't surprise me...well.
Anyway, are the rear lift gates the same for all the years the classic body style was made? Any one ever had this happen to them? AAAARRRRHHHHHGGGG!

I had this happen a few years ago on a different car to a rear door window. Driving along and just shattered. Couldn't find anyone throwing rocks, and the fact that the window essentially disintegrated made me think it was a flaw in the glass triggered somewhow. I think throwing a rock or bullet would leave a pattern where in my case the entire window crumbled into tiny pieces.

If you find out it was a UFO or something let me know.

Barrett that is truly interesting! Same thing occurred on my (ok it was my father's but I drove it) 1995 Rover County. I was driving down the road(mind you it was a dirt road) and it just shattered, no sign of rocks, guns, kids, ect. I believe we repaired @ the LR dealership. Maybe it could be a design malfunction or something?? The range had about 100,000 miles on it.

Dude that sucks...sorry to hear it. I purchased a new upper tailgate from roverland.com for $400, if you wanna go that route. Came complete with glass, 3rd brake light wiring and hinges. I transferred my 3rd brake light unit and the lifting struts over to the new one.

On another note, I advise all LR owners to purchase the "glass buy back" policy from their insurance company. Basically, you pay $100 deductible and the rest is picked up by the ins company. My main reason for purchasing this policy was for the replacement of the expensive RRC windshield. Thankfully I haven't had to replace it yet but I did use the policy to replace the shattered sunroof on my FZJ80.

Just my .02 cents worth! Have a good weekend.

I phoned the dealer for a few laughs. They wanted $900.00 for the glass..hahaha...I found the entire hatch for $200 at a bone yard. I think I'll go with that one. LOL

Good find bro. Before you install the new hatch, try to rust proof it a little...like close up any water ingress holes, spray wax inside the frame, etc..

Have fun.
