Hi Folks,
I took my '00 RR 4.6 HSE in for a service yesterday- oil change due, horn didn't work, and I had an occasional clicking sound under the hood. The oil change took 10 mins, the horn problem was a relay, and the clicking was excessive piston slap- new engine going in next week! It only has 47k on the clock- I was amazed. Very glad I bought from a LR dealer- extended warranty already paid for its self!
Have a great weekend,
Paul.

Wow what a great dealer. Where did you take it?

Glad your situation worked out ok. Shame that LR can't make a decent engine :-(

Aaron,
I bought the rig at Lyle Pearson LR, in Boise Idaho. They've been great- I am SO glad I bought from a dealer! I can't believe the engine needs replacement after just 47k, but like A. Ali said, it is a shame they can't make a decent engine. I'll keep you updated on progress!
Cheers,
Paul.

Just hope it doesn't happen again when the warranty goes out. Engine replacement at 47k miles should not happen, ask the dealer why this happened. Lucky you had a warranty.

Alan,
all they said was that there was excessive piston slap. And here I was thinking the pistons were supposed to stay put! No noticeable oil consumption or loss of power- and consistently got 20 mpg hwy. I hope to get more answers when they get the old engine out...
Cheers,
Paul.

Update- now there's a problem with the head(s) and it'll be a few more days. I keep telling myself to focus on a free new engine, but I am curious to know what happened after just 47k miles to necessitate a whole new engine.
More news as it happens...
cheers,
Paul.

Picked it up last night. New block, and heads on one side. The service manager told me the camshaft was floating on both ends. Cost to me: $0. Can't be bad. They have an '01 4.6 SE in gold with 35k miles for $31,500- if anyone is interested, I recommend this dealer. (Lyle Pearson, Boise Idaho- it has an airport)
Cheers,
Paul.

Land Rover engine are very reliable, just the electronics that control them tend to be hazy. Compared to other manufactures they do not have any more or less problems with drivetrain.

As for the engine needing to be replaced, I am going to go with the possiblity that the motor was overheated at one point. Esp. since the heads had an issue; did they resurface them?; The only other time that I have seen the 4.6 have faults is the oil pumps on some of the 03 Disco's weren't machined properly resulting in loss of oil pressure after a couple of thousand miles
