Help
When I turn the key the motor turns like it wants to start, but no start. I thought maybe the battery, but all the lights work. So I plugged a portable jump starter up to it, and it still won't start. I'm not sure if this portable thing is strong enough? Does anyone have any suggestions to what this problem is?

When you say it wants to start, but doesn't...is the motor turning over like it should or is it just not firing?

If not turning over like it should, it could still be the battery, a ground cable going to the starter or the starter itself.

If turning over, but not starting, then I would check to make sure the fuel pump is kicking on when you are turning the engine over.

The Engine is Turning over like normal, I can hear the fuel pump working when the key is turned on I tried replacing the fuel pump relay. I wonder about a Ignition Module?

Must be an epidemic. I just had the same thing happen last week on my 92. Had to replace plugs, wires, and a few other odds and ends. Basically a mini overhaul of the ignition components. I suspect the best way to pin it down is to get it on a scope.

Do you have fuel?

Do you have spark?

Go from there working back. if no fuel, could be pump, relay, filter etc...

No spark, check coil , plugs, grounds and look for engine code under passenger seat.

I will check for Spark this evening and if I have spark then I will go to fuel. There is No code reading on the box under passenger seat should it always read something even If there is noth wrong? I'm just wondering if it is even working?

went through some of the same stuff couple of weeks ago in my 95 Disco. turned out to be rotor arm was bad. like Rob said, do the diagnostics for the spark and the fuel. if you have the manual, it has the tests right in there under the Electrics section for the spark. if you need any of that info, let me know and i can probably copy and past from my manual on cd and email it to you.

Ok guys, I'm 'the wife' and Ivan's not here tonight...so I went out to take a look. Checked plugs on teh Distributor, etc. But I wanted to have a look at the ignition rotor and wasn't sure if I could remove the d-cap without doing anything else first....we are thinking about ordering a couple of those little buggers just to have around!

I also wondered about the 'ignition lead relay' is that a concern? And how do you look for codes under the passenger seat...do you need the code reader?

(can you tell I've been reading the workshop manual?) I would love to have this thing running before he gets home! :-)

http://www.lrfaq.org/RR/FAQ.Engines.Fault.Codes.html

you have to plug in the thing under the passenger seats. some kind of industrial velcro holds the plastic panel on that covers it.

dont un plug the wires going into the distributor cap unless you remember what order they go in.

simply inspecting the rotor arm will not show it's fault most times. puting a new one on gives it away.

the proceedure in the manual that is very good at tracking down the symptoms.

Thanks Rob...guess I'll wait to look under the cap. Will check on the codes. Heading home now...this will be our mystery of the weekend...trace the sickness of the Rangie! Could be a new game.

Has anyone heard of moisture in the distributor cap from rain and moisture in the air? My code reader under the passenger seat reads nothing just blank is it suppost to be blank unless there is a fault code?
