Now that my spare lies flat in the back, and I have my other supplies that are about the same height, I was thinking of building a "table" of sorts to go over the top. Picture one of those breakfast-in-bed tables with a top connected to 2 short sides.

This would be made out of plywood and be covered in auto upholstery. I'm thinking a flat top that would be about the height of the rear seats when folded down. This would make a nice, big, flat load 'floor" over everything.

Anyone doen anything like this and have pictures to share?

David, the guy from Northbyrovers.com did something similar on his Disco. Check out his webpage for more detail.

I made my own shelf but at the same level as the side shelf. I carry my spare on the roof.

David,

Long time ago I built a simple plywood box with drawer that was about the width of the cargo area. The box was about six inches height and the drawer had multiple sections for carrying recovery stuff. Sounds like you got a good plan in your head.

Good luck,
Ali

Johnc,
I coulnd't find anything on Northbyrovers.com. Do you have a different link?

Alia,
Yeah, I've seen some of the drawer pieces, but with my tire there, there isn't much point. But a good solid platform would be good and the dog would still have space back there with all my stuff tucked away underneath her.

Might have to start on it this weekend. :-)

David,

The website link is actually www.northbyrover.com

Another option is you can make the spare fit the normal spare location. I got my spare 235/85 to fit by modifying the mounting point of the tire along with the dip in the floor. I didn't want to mess with relocating the seatbelt anchor so my tire tips in instead of being straight up and down. Then you could do like what Ali was saying.
