On my recent service invoice from roverland they listed some items for future repair. I was wondering which of the items I should not even try to do myself. I've never worked on the rover myself but would like to start somewhere. Here they are . . . 1. 20% left on front brakes, 35% rear 2. recommend to replace radiator hose 3. power steering box leak 4. rear differential pinion seal seepage 5. front main seal seepage 6. engine mount worn Any advice would be much appreciated. ivan

In order from easiest to "don't even begin to ponder the thought of thinking about trying" 1,2,4,3,5,6. the brakes are generaly pretty easy. Just pray to the gods that you never have to replace the parking brake cable. I don't exactly know how mechanicaly inclined you are but I would treat the front seal and the engine mount like the grinch....I wouldn't touch them with a 39.5 ft pole. I never worked on a rover until I bought mine but I can manage most of the stuff. Good luck. This concludes my current statement Bob |

Thanks Bob. I'll likely stop at the radiator hose. |

1. 20% left on front brakes, 35% rear Easy as pie 2. recommend to replace radiator hose Easy as pie 3. power steering box leak How bad is it? I would probably skip, otherwise not bad if mechanically inclined 4. rear differential pinion seal seepage never fix seepage on a rover 5. front main seal seepage see above 6. engine mount worn not any more difficult than other engine mounts, but its not that easy |

Not trying to sound "smart" here, but they are all easy IF you have the right expertise, tools, parts on hand, and location to do it. Thats the beauty of Rovers. But the most important thing in considering these things is to examine whether you have the interest, will and patience to get into it, learn, and be willing to bite the bullet if you screw something up. After 34 years of working on all kinds of cars, I'm pretty willing to tackle all of these things. I've acquired most of the tools, I've gained the experience (the garage could be a bit better); but there are a few things that after doing them once I stay clear of because for one reason or another, they are a PITA. But with all this said, after doing things at least once, at least you will know something about it (and maybe yourself) when its completed. This knowledge might come in handy some stormy night when you find yourself out in the bush. Good luck.

They are all easily done except for the mail seal. You definately want to either replace the pinion seal or have it done...definately! If the pinion flange starts leaking diff lube, youll have to check and fill it or you'll loose it altogether. AB and other suppliers make a PS output seal replacement kit - common issue on our older trucks. Engine mount is very easy also. |
