Take a tip from someone who has tated the bitter fruit of experience. Don't use dino oil. It will sludge up the engine. Use Mobil 1 or better. It may be more $$, but you can change at 4k instead of every 3K, plus, down the line, your engine internals will be good as new.

I was told by my mechanic to run Rotella T with a quart of marbel mystery oil in my RRC it has 159,000 miles on her. I was told Rotella T is suppost to keep sludge out of the engine? I don't know much about this kind of oil, I do know a lot of truckers use this stuff.

I have run Shell Rotella T 15w40 in my Disco; it will clean the engine by itself, without the Marvel Mystery oil (since this oil is designed to clean up Diesel truck engines. I haven't had an issue with it at all, although I am going synthetic after I run another oil change of Shell.

Going complete Synthetic to make everything last longer.

I would use Dello instead of Rotella T. I work in a lube center here in Vegas and we have lots of people using the Dello. The guys that use it in their diesels say the Dello is much better than the Rotella T. We only hear good things about it.

Diesel rated oils are I think a good idea for these engines with a lot of miles. In particular they are high detergent and designed to control deposits on the piston rings. Aside from the additives, diesels put more strain on oil due to high compression, so the oils have to be high quality. The only downside is the phosphorus in the additive package can affect some catalytic converters. I use Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40.

Delo 400 used to have a better base stock (the "Isosyn" or Group II) than dino Rotella T (Group I before but now Group II also), but not sure how the additive package compares. Mobil 1 uses Group IV base stocks, Rotella T Syn uses Group III.

Ivan - You are entering the twilight zone on the life of your engine. If your mechanic is telling you to add a very high detergent oil AND supplement it with MMO, that should tell you something. If you look down your oil filler neck on the valve cover, it should have a dark bronze patina. If it looks black and chunky...the end is in sight. Mine took a dump at 165K. It all started with a failed rocker arm. Upon disassembly, the mains were worn to the copper layer as were the rod bearings. There was a1/4" layer of a chunky, tar-like substance in the bottom of the oil pan. CLEAN THAT OUT. After I bought my RR., I wondered why the oil looked dirty so soon after I had just changed it. A gunky pan was the culprit.
