everything is going fine, heater puts out hot air, aux. temp gauge holds steady at 180-190°.........then..........hot air comming out of vents seems to be mixed with cold air producing only warm air; temp gauge starts to bounce around from 180° to 200°. Replaced thermostat with no change. Whats up????

air in cooling system?
try reversing the voodo spell. simply add human hair to the grill, splashing small amounts of hand crushed red berries to the wind sheild. a small fire and a large spanner! saying awake rover god and be gone! or try driving through new orleans! !
hope you get it fixed

dhk is probably right - how else could the temp climb and then cold air come out? It almost has to be air in the system or a blockage in the heater core. If it is a Classic, you can open the top cap of the radiator, and watch the flow to see if it flows nicely. The only way I know of to get the air out is to drive it (offroad seems to work best) a bit to get it burping the air out, and refill the resivoir when cold to the top a few times. If it still does the temp climbing thing it could be the fan belt/clutch failing, water pump or radiator clog (clogged rad is super common too). Still - the wierd thing is the cool air coming out eh?

has brand spanking new radiator, fan clutch working fine, tried burping, when i replaced the thermostate, i did notice a lack of coolant in that area; will look for blocked heater core next. i dont mind the cool air mixed with heat for now (summer comming on) but that eratic needle jump has got me upset.

its a rrc, 1988....the air comming out of the heater vents (high or low) is warm air, not hot.
it was producing "hot" air two weeks ago, now just "warm". it is not intermitent, its constant.

I have an 88 also. It fluctuates temp a lot on the highway, between 210 and 240 on along grade or hills. Mine is geared 4.10 so it does run at a bit higher rpm than stock so I expect some temp, but not that much. Im replacing the radiator to see if that helps. I just ran all the way to Moab and back at an average of about 220 degrees. It may just be that the mechanical guage is getting heat from the manifold or some other source...that could be your issue too maybe?
