I was just looking at the ERC project pages and noticed someone getting an Automatic 300TDi D90 built. Could anyone across the pond give an insight on what it's like to drive an Auto 300TDi? I would think it would be a complete pig. Do they even offer an auto 300TDi from the factory? |

Al, I have had a Disco 300Tdi Auto since 95 and I find the combo Auto/ Tdi pretty good. The Auto box is the old 4 speed as found on Classic RR. The auto box makes the Tdi smoother and is sometimes a real plus off road at low speed. It is also a lot smoother for towing. One does loose out in term of accelaration from scratch, but the difference is not that obvious once you are up to speed and accelaration between 3rd and Drive is perfectly acceptable for European standard (we tend to drive a bit faster than in the States...). The box also makes gear changing a lot smoother, where as the manual clucth on the standard Tdi is far from refined and the gear lever is not very accurate. Also, the Auto is very good at minimising play in the transmission over the years... Last but not least, we have had a beautiful RR 3.9 with a very annoying 15/17 mpg on a good day, whereas the disco runs at 27/30 mpg(with the Auto box). Luc |
