My low beam left is out and it doesn't seem to be a fuse. I haven't pulled the headlight apart yet and I am assuming the bulbs can be replaced. If so, does anyone have a good source for these (halogen?) and could I UP the wattage. My low beams were barely there and highs seldom get people flashing at me. Advice appreciated, thanks.

factory lights on a 90 suck for seeing stuff. check out http://catalog.com/susq/hella/headlamp.htm for some E-code replacements. no need to change wattage for a tremendous improvement.

I've been using the vision plus for about six months and have nothing but great things to say about them. The difference is impressive. I live in BF Colorado where there are no lines on the road and no srtreet lamps and they help a ton.

yes the Hella vision plus are nice and I have them on my 109. The real E-codes though on my RR are even better; especially the low beams.

either one will be a dramatic improvement over stock lighting.

Phillip,

check the link on my previous post.

real difference between the two is the lens design. Hella vision plus is a DOT approved design while the "E" code are the ones used in Europe. They have a sharper cut-off on low beams and have a better beam pattern resulting in more light either on low or high beam.

with a newer type bulb, the difference should be even better. once my original Halogen bulbs go, I going to try a Xenon gas bulb.

Thanks much,
If we go with the E codes what bulbs might you suggest?
Will they like my stock wiring OK?
Note: These are my only lights right now.
Thanks again!

One thing to consider when upgrading is how necessary it is to you to have headlights that have that all-important DOT stamp.

As noted, Hella makes some great headlights that are DOT approved, but if you wish you can buy the E-code lamps (designed for Europe, not strictly legal in US). With the E-code lamps you always run the slight chance that your friendly local law enforcement officer could require you to park it until you make it US-legal.

I have the DOT approved Hellas, and they are nice. Of course, I have my Hella 4000s that I run sometimes on the road - definitely not following the letter of the law there, but they sure light up lonely roads real nice!

Milli,

I'm using the standard wattage 60/55 for the H4 E-codes and have no complaints. The Xenon bulb will be an upgrade when these burnout. I've had them now for 5 years.

No doubt Pugsly is correct if you have any concerns about the local law. Personally, I've driven all over PA., up to and back from Maine, from OK. to PA. and back many times without any problems, out to CO., etc.. You get the picture.

Think the key is proper adjustment. The opposing traffic will see less light if aimed right.

DOT Hellas are OK, yet, true E-codes are better bang for the buck.

"Before you spend the money for upgraded bulbs, you might first want to evaluate your wiring. First, with a good Voltmeter"
Is this an excuse to buy a new toy?
My rear defrost and rear interior light are not working and I thought this might be useful again.
Any reccomendations?
They have a E Code Yellow Star H4 with a 80/70 that they claim less "dazzeling". That might be the ticket. Thanks for the help.

Milli,

where are you located??

the Yellow Star bulb is coated and produces a yellow light like a big foglight. while somewhat common in Great Britian and other parts of Europe, not very common in the US. guess it would look pretty cool on a D90 though.

unless you're living in mostly foggy conditions, think the clear 60/55 watt bulb would be better.

Thanks Jamie,
I'm in Olympia, WA. (When is it not foggy here?!)
I talked to the guy at Susquahanna (Dave) he was real cool. He suggested the E-codes in the Xenon bulbs like you and anticipates getting 50%ers soon ($2 more than the standard 30% w/same 60/55). He put them on the site today. Also, he said the main difference in the E-codes vs. DOT is the light that points upwards. US specs are 5% now but used to be 20%. In Europe they light all overhead signs.
I might try the yellows. I had a pair of yellow lense B&L glasses that were great for the "drab skies" out here.
I guess you can interchange these bulbs so maybe I'll get both.
Anyhow, thanks for the help!

Very cool Milli!! Changing bulbs is really easy. As you might have heard before, just make sure you do not touch the bulb as it leaves a "grease" mark which creates a hot spot and really reduces the bulb live.

If you remember, I'd be very interested in hearing how you like the yellow bulbs.

good luck!

Jaime

Spend the money for a wiring harness with relays, or make your own. The benefits are two fold. First, you will get more voltage to the bulb, and the same bulb will be noticeably brighter on the new wiring than it was on the old. Two, it takes the load off the headlamp switch, as the Defenders are not wired with headlamp relays. Even if you don't upgrade the bulbs, these switches have a tendency to burn out, so by taking the load off the switch, you are all but eliminating another Land Rover Electrical point of failure!

OK, think I'm done with that for a while. The Yellow Stars are not too freaky looking and really good when it is foggy. Like Jamie said, you can see right through patchy fog.
I did melt a headlight switch on the 65/70 watt bulbs(The green light on my dash just went out and so did my headlights).
It took me a while but I got a Painless wiring harness in over the weekend. Again, do yourself a favor and plan for these relays. Let me know if you have questions and I'll help you out. I hadn't even soldered since High School, so this was unchartered waters, but pretty simple. Thanks all.
