My 94 D90 just started this pleasant habit of overheating when stopped in traffic, bank drive thru, etc. Runs fine on the road, needle right about in the middle. As soon as I sit for a few minutes, up the needle goes, eventually up to the red in about 5-8 minutes...I've changed the thermostat, fan clutch, coolant flush, etc. Water pump seems fine. ideas? Clogged radiator? Bad pump? |

The shop forman at the dealership told me that the guage in the dash is not the most accurate guage out there. Mine was getting pretty hot by the guage readings. I have a 97 D-90 ST. He thru a blanket over the radiator and let it run. The guage got all the way into the red. He was monitering the temp using a lasar thermometer. He claimed that Rover specs say that the motor overheats at 240 deg. Far.. It never got above 230 deg. He "probed the thermostat housing, the upper radiator hose and the two temp sensors on the top of the block. They are going to change a few different sensors next week, the A/C condensor fan isn't coming on. I will keep you posted if that makes a big difference.....Dave |

Jon, There are a few good threads on this both on the D90 Yahoo group and on The D-90 Source. There is a number of things relating to D90 overheating it could be. Chris von C. |

Mine only overheats on the very cold days randomly in the winter. The gauge also randomly changes with engine RPM. Add this to the fuel gauge that sways 1/2 a tank on corners and hills, the speedometer that bounces like crazy, and an odometer that rewinds itself to 100k after you park for a while and you have one interesting ride. |

yes, thanks Jon. actually my RR is with ECR having some work done to it so am driving the 109 on a daily basis. at least when I'm in town. great fun to drive, however, its getting into the HOT season here in Tulsa so the ride into work is nice while the ride home is like a blast furnace! Jaime

Jon My D90 is currently doing the same thing and I've pretty much done the same things to mine trying to track down the problem. Like previously posted, it could be any number of things. Some things to consider: 1. Could be a head gasket. Are you losing coolant? Change your oil and look for milky streaks and also check for coolant around the valley gaskets and the thermostat area. Do you smell coolant in the exhaust? 2. Could be the hoses. Small cracks/pin hole leaks can cause overheating until they flat out blow out. DAP has a complete set for about $70. 3. Could be the radiator. You can get 'em re-cored for around $250, a lot cheaper than buying a new one. 4. Like Dave said, the gauges and sensors on the D90 are sketchy. The temp sensor is relatively cheap and easy to replace. I'm doing the cheap stuff first (hoses & temp sensor are next) and have pretty much ruled out the head gasket for mine. Good luck. |

I had the same problem in my '87 Jeep Cherokee 4x4. If it only happens at traffic lights (when vehicle is at idle), I'm willing to bet it's your viscous fan clutch! I replaced mine on the Jeep for $50 and it's good as new.
