Well, things are never simple in LR land - not even a radio switchover. I planned on swapping in a '93 RR radio for the D90 one. Fitting the two connectors as is produces no sound. Even applying a signal directly to the speaker wires in the pink connector does nothing. According to the wiring diagram these wires go straight to the speakers so there should be sound.

Anyway if someone has the RR output diagram I can work with it. Finally, does the RR unit have built in amp or is an external amp required? I'm assuming the D90 is built in since I didn't notice an amp anywhere, and the wiring diagram doesn't mention one.

Someone just told me that the D90 does have an external amp. I tell ya...I'm sick of all these "manuals" out there not being correct. Granted, I don't have NAS ones but even the RAVE is wrong on this one - of course, I'm assuming the external amp does exist, RAVE says no.

The external amp is found under the passanger seat. Just a question, why do you want to put a RR radio in your truck instead of some nice modern new radio? I put a Sony FM/AM/MP3 unit for a few hundred bucks and it sounds better than any LR radio.....Dave

I like the RR's:

big buttons (work well with gloves)
weather band
real volume knob (quicker than today's buttons)

I only use cassettes only and the sound of the D90 is just fine, but the LCD has died. Heck, the RR one cost me only $40.

Be careful, I just bought an Alpine in-dash CD unit for my D90. The stock radio/cassette (no cd changer) crapped out. Anyway, my new Alpine won't play cd's when mounted vertically (skips like a mother) so make sure you check that out.

Ron, most of the Blaupunkt CD players are enabled for playing vertically. Although, I would recommend going with a tape deck and putting in a 6 disc changer. I got mine from Sony.

Crutchfield can help you find a player that mounts and plays vertically.

Dave, I'll probably add the Alpine changer at some point...

Cool. Any thoughts on a Sub in the future? I wanted to add one to my system, but want to make it stealthy. I still haven't found anything to my liking. I was considering trying to cram a powered bazooka tube behind the jump seats. But haven't decided on that just yet.

you think there is enough space back there for the btube? Would it be possible to run one off the stocker head unit?

I doubt you'd would want to run one of the stock unit. But it never hurts to ask a professional install shop in your area. Maybe a powered amp would do okay for a while.

I haven't measure yet, but I was thinking maybe a 6" tube would fit in those spaces.

There is enough room for the B-tube behind the rear seat. If the B-tube has a line level input then you can run it off of your stock head unit. You simply run a set of speaker wires to the Line level input on the B-tube. The wires can even be run from the rear speakers.
If you do not like the B-tubes then you may want to take a look at the powered sub Infinity makes. It is more powerful then the B-tubes and is made to be mounted under your seat. I don't know if it would fit under the rear seat or not but it would be more stealthy if it did fit.
I have a powered B-tube and it is OK. It also gets rained on alot and it still works fine.

right on. When you say behind the rear seat I dont guess you are talking about the seats on the SW. DO you have your toob hooked up thru the stocker system?

The rear seat in the ST. I have a Sony head unit, speakers and amp so it is hooked directly to the Line outputs on the head unit. But my toob does have a speaker level in. All of the stereo system in my 90 is also 5+ years old so it is fairly durable. Currently my toob is behind the front seats. With the top off having it behind the rear seat is not all that effective. I also throw a rubbermaid box in place of the rear seat to store stuff in for wheelin and having the toob behind the front seats makes taking things in and out easier.

I was told by one of my local dealerships that alot of people are putting the freelander CD player in the Defenders. Supposedly it matches up perfect but i have not done any research on this. If anyone else knows anything about this i would like to hear what you think about it.
