Does anyone know what year they started making the Defender(110)? Was it once called the Country? What engines (petrol, not diesel) have they had in them? Are there any years to avoid? What has changed in them over the years (Body, suspension, etc.)? Will parts from newer ones fit on older ones? If I were to buy an 84 with a 3.4L V-8, how hard would it be to get parts (engine and body)?
To me they look very similar. I guess it is how the Disco 1 and 2 are to my wife. I can tell the difference, but I know what to look for.

84-90ish you could still get the V8.

84 has the LT95 which is a four speed and less desireable than the LT85/LT230 combo on the later V8 trucks but this is no reason not to buy it.

The carbed V8 is a bit of a PITA to tune but no biggy. Parts are easy. Roversnorth or anyone in the UK can get everything. If it is a UK truck check for chassis rust. Knew someone with an 85 90 that needed a new chassis as it lived in the UK then Minnesota.

110s were introduced in '83 with 2.25L and 3.5L petrol motors. There was a model on the wagon called the "County", not "Country" that offered upgraded interior and had a self-leveling rear and power-assisted steering like the Rangie. '83s were the only year with sliding windows. From '84 on they had roll-up windows.
In '85, the V8 switched to the LT85 gearbox. I don't know exactly the year, but sometime between '84 and '87, LR started painting the galvanized edge pieces than ran along the top of the bed and down the rear corners. By '88, front bumpers were painted black and the wheel arches were body color on the County.

Ron's right. Parts are not all that hard to find ... Roversnorth probably being the best source.
Hope that helps some-

I thought the painted caps were along with the change to defender circa 1990

Anyhoo

No matter for our good friend.

1984 110s should have the early style doors which are very rare for a 110 BUT found one all series III land rovers (read cheaper and easy to find) Lots of a 110 body is the same as a 109 so no biggy what so ever to find body parts.

Here's a fairly good link on the 90/110/Defender History:
http://website.lineone.net/~nat_hale/defender.htm

Then if you click on the 'Fact Files' there are tables listing the engines and its years.
