I'm a dII owner for a few years now. I'm looking at a '97 D90 that looks really sweet. Owner took great car of the interior and exterior. Price is right, but the mileage is 100K. The only reason this bothers me is that the rig is 800 miles from me and I can't drive it for myself. The owner states it drives like it had 20K miles, and from the appearance of the rest of the rig, including pictures of the undercarriage, I don't doubt it. Any helpful thoughts on this dilemma? What should I expect from a mint D90 with 100K miles? If the engine, drivetrain or trans quits on me a year or two into it. What should I expect to pay to get things fixed or replaced?

IMHO, you gotta drive it and set eyes on it before you can buy it. Alternately post where it is and see if someone on the list can look at it / vouch for it.

Even if you have to buy a plane ticket to go see it - how much will that add percentage-wise to the total price? Probably not a lot, and it would be a wise insurance investment.

'97s were all auto boxes, right? If not, and it has a manual, that could be bad. A lot of the guys on the D90 list are on their second or third manual transmission. If it's an auto, then don't worry.

Can you get a cheap round trip flight there? If the truck sucks you can fly home and if it's good you can drive. Buying over the phone sucks, although most 90s are probably pretty nice.

It is a d90 with auto trans. I guess I'll have to make some flight reservations...

Niall,
Doesn't the 1994-1995 Defender 90 use the same R380 manual transmission as the Disco? If this is the case, the transmission should be as reliable as the Discos. I have a Disco with this transmission and have had only clutch related problems.

Well, word on the D90 list is that the R380 is plenty crappy. Like I said, I'm not speaking from experience, but this seems to be a common thing. I wouldn't avoid one if it seemed to be in good shape but I'd keep it in mind.

Niall,
I have a 94 D90 with the R380 and I have to say that even with 100k miles she is working great. Yes my truck gets wheeled often and hard and I have no complaints. I would not shy away from a 90 with high miles unless it was not well sorted. The discussion is irrelivent because all 97 D90's have an auto box.

After doing some research, I found out that early 1994 Defenders used the LT77, which is supposedly weaker than the R380. Maybe this was the transmission Niall was referring to.

If reverse is foward and to the left, it's an LT77 •••••• (:)), if reverse is to the right and back, it's an R380 •••••• (:)).

Yes, the R380 is stronger than the LT77, but, is still weaker than the ZF autobox.

I have a LT77 with 75K on it. There are still lots of the 77s out there and going strong. Just take care of it and maintain it. Stock trucks are more challenging off road in many ways. Some wheelers like that challenge.
