I have a Disco 1, and do most of my own work on it. How different are the defenders? I am thinking about trading the disco in on one as soon as I can talk my wife into it.
Are Defenders as (un)reliable as the Discos? Are they basically the same?
Thanks

They've got a lot in common. What a Defender has that isn't in common with a Disco is in common with a Series Land Rover. They're a bit easier to work on, but yes, they're very much a Rover.... same leaks, same Lucas electrics, same Al-Fe corrosion issues, etc. etc.

IMHO, FWIW......

My 94 D90 beats my 94 D1 hands down when it come to reliability. Not sure if it's just the simplicity of the D90 but my life has become for the most part stress free. They are both fairly easy to work on. The D90 has soooo much less to go wrong. My Disco had a list a mile long of things to do. Most of them things like sunroofs, lights, rear door.... Man I don't miss that! Yes, Leslie is right it is a rover, more a rover than the disco. It's noisy, sparse and it leaks oil like the rest of them. The switch was the best choice I had made in a while. Good luck with your choice:)

Greg,

I've actually gone the opposite route as you: previously a D90 owner and now a Disco owner. In my opinion, mechanically they're virtually identical (ie 3.9 vs 3.9). The big difference in maintenence and up keep is all the little extras that the Disco has: power windows, sunroofs etc, that are more prone to failure... The basic Defender is far more spartan and reliable. As long as the drive train is in good shape, there's not much else to go wrong that could strand you...
