In some Land Rover magazines they have advertisements for refurbished Land Rovers. I always overlook them, but, just for the hell of it, I emailed one of them and they said that they can get a 25year old "90," and make it so that it is US-spec. Is this possible? I was qouted $18000USD for a 300tdi, left hand drive, 6-seat, 5-speed, Defender county trim vehicle. This is without shipping. Is this legal, wouls I register it as a kit car? |

Not sure on that one. Do some due diligence in talking to vehicle import/export companies. Check local and federal laws. Also see if they have US references for people who have done this... That would tell you a lot. |

Couple of things.... If it's really 25-years old, it's legal, ie, a 1977 Series III is fair game. The 110 came out in '83, and shortly after, the 90. So, no, they're not legal for importation yet. The only 110 that is legal to be imported now is a '93, and only if converted to match the LRNA versions. If you go through the petition process, a '94-'97 D90 should be allowable too. Some 110s were brought in prior to a tightening in inport restrictions; thus, you can find circa '84 110s floating around that are legal. To take a 110, re-register it as being a '77, then bringing it over, is illegal. You can buy parts, build a vehicle in your garage, then register it as a kit car. To keep it honest, you should use parts from several vehicles, instead of dissassembling one, shipping the bits, then putting it back together.... however, you would probably get by with that. Maybe. FYI, you can't import a kit car, you would have to build it yourself, or, have it built over here for you. Remember, the company may say "yes it's legal", but they're not the ones that will have a vehicle confiscated if it's not. They don't get to decide what is or what isn't legal. Be careful..... -L |
