The article said it has indi. susp. front and rear... why? They're trying to make it ride like a toyota or something. This doesn't bode well for the disco. Hopefully they'll leave the disco alone for a few more years and keep the solid axles. What do you guys think?

I think the D2 will be the last solid axle LR we see. I read something recently that seems to suggest that the next D90 (not the 2002 D90) that we see in the US will also sport an independent suspension and that LR will only make solid axles for speciality applications.

Makes me hug my little IIA a little tighter at night. If only she would stop leaving oil spots in bed....

What I'm hoping happens is...

The new Defender arrives, and the price on the 94-97 ones drops, HARD....

Then we can pick them up to USE instead of them being investment pieces....

IMO...

I think I read somewhere (cant remember where) that solid axels will be discontinued in the discoveries with it being an option available to AID agencies and the military. However the solid axels will continue in the defender line, due to the fact that farmers use them and they carry heaver loads etc.

What is up with those lights?!?
That thing looks like all the Honda's I race around town in my $105,000 Disco That thing is the Range Rover Civic, all they need to do now is stick a Type R sticker on there and a softball warmer exhaust. And how bout all that plastic Ford junk on there!?!. Unfortunatly after seeing this, I don't think Land Rover will be around much longer.
-JC

Soon as the new D90s arrive, I gettin me a high mileage 94-95.

since I don't forsee buying another rover for awhile (i have a 99 dII) i kind of like that they are going with the ind. susp. I think mabey that might bring a premium in the future for those with solid axels. So mabey I can get a better resale value for it if I ever sell it. (which is doubtful)

Even though the details are yet to be released, I would expect that the new RR's independent suspensions are designed and engineered smarter than others, more off-road-oriented, and much stronger than others.

this is what we all expect to get from LR, but, let's see...

Guys-
Don't be fooled by the ifs/irs setup. It actually provides more travel than the current RangeRover suspension. Not your typical indi.. setup.

Kyle- my thoughts exactly, take at look at the new BMW 7 series (e65). Especially the interior.

Well I sorta agree, but if you look closely at the currnet 2nd generation RR, you will see VOLVO- especially the 940-960-etc series...look closely at the rear end, but hey thats EUROPE-in the end they are all related-we do it here, CHEVY=GMC blah, blah, blah..maybe I'm not as on point with this but hey, its 11:38pm way past my bedtime-
94Rover

Guys I also have a confession- I have eyes for the Ford F-250 pickup, Shortbed extracab----
and also I've had my eyes on a Toyota Tacoma 4x4 pickup extra cab-Whats wrong with me-

Isn't this new (L30) Range Rover built on the X5 platform? I think it uses the same 4.4L V8 too. I don't know about the styling, it doesn't quite flow like the last 2 generations did. But that interior is really nice. Did you notice the BMW tiptronic tranny? If I had the choice($$$) of buying this or a MB G500, i'd take the Mercedes.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Gil Stevens (Gil) on Friday, November 09, 2001 - 09:28 am: Edit

not the x5 platform.. the wheelbase is 113.3 inches, it is signifigantly larger than the current rangie or the x5.. ive never been a fan of indepent suspensions, but after thrashing freelanders through the las vegas desert for 6 hours, im convinced the LR indy setup is a little different.. for a tiny little CRV-esque vehicle, the freelander is very capable, not for real hardcore stuff..but thats not what it is meant for.. still though, far more capable than anything else in its class. Even the unibody set up is pretty beefy as it is on the new range rover.. you have to rememeber to that the majority of folks droppin 70 large on a range rover have no intention of removing it from the pavement..

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Jeff Bieler (Mrbieler) on Friday, November 09, 2001 - 10:07 am: Edit

"far more capable than anything else in its class"
=> Unfortunately, that is what LR is moving towards and away from their old motto of "The Best 4x4xFar".

Now all they want to be is better then a Lexus...

Keep in mind that our old Beat up Discoverys are in that class and will readily kick ass , take names , and be still doing it after those new ones have died.......

Probably offroads like a BMW car also!

With new, more powerful petrol and diesel engines, the New Range Rover always has power in reserve. And with its independent suspension, front and rear, it's the same refined drive, off-road or in town.

I'm not so sad that the RR is getting this treatment as it's a vehicle priced at a level I would never spend (even with the money). However, I am depressed knowing that the Disco will get these components as hand-me-downs in a few years... :-(

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Bluegill (Bluegill) on Friday, November 09, 2001 - 02:21 pm: Edit

for that money, and that amount of "refinement & luxury" wouldn't you rather have a nice, powerful & tight benz or beemer sedan or coupe? Unless you live somwhere where roads are non-existant or winters are severe, I just don't understand the market for an upper-class off-road beast. All the dirt on my boots and grease under my fingernails would royally f#@k up all that exotic interior trim...

we are all the vast minority how many rovers especailly RR do you think are taken off road..exactly..I know many people with Disco's and they would dream of touching the diff-lock..how many soccer moms etc would even begin to understand the entire concept of actually going off road.. with the way things continue to go i think rover will have 4wd as an option.. who knows what will become of four wheel drive

Let's face it, the Rangie is dead...

The Disco is almost dead, and with IFS/IRS, it is dead...

I can't even start with the POS Freelander...

LRNA is done, gone...history. If my Rover dies and I can't find another solid axle coiler Rover with a distributor, I'll by a Jeep.

Brian

I'm with you on that Brian, my plans next semester are to take some welding classes at night so I can start custom building my own stuff.
In a few years there will be lots of nice clean Rovers down the road ready to be turned into trail machines, as the soccer moms move on to the next "thing."

I got in on this late. True, LR has announced they are dropping solid axles, but that was before Bill took over at Ford. There has been a bit of a shake-up at LR, with Bob Dover coming back into the picture a little more. Things could change. Again. And since things change, you have to wonder what the RR would evolve into, if not what we see in Gen-3? Face it, folks, before too much longer, the Disco will be due for more than grill modification and different interior colors. Will it retain the alpine windows? Expect change.

Bud
