The following excerpt is taken from the testimony given by LtCol Oliver North during the Iran-Contra hearings during the Reagan administration:

'Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?'

North replied, 'Yes I did sir.'

The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience,
'Isn't this just a little excessive?'

'No sir,' continued North.

'No. And why not?'

'Because the life of my family and I were threatened.'

'Threatened? By who.'

'By a terrorist, sir.'

'Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?'

'His name is Osama bin Laden.'

At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but couldn't pronounce it, which most people back then probably couldn't. A couple of people laughed at the attempt. Then the senator continued.

'Why are you so afraid of this man?'

'Because sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of.'

'And what do you recommend we do about him?'

'If it were me I would recommend an assassin team be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth.'

Something to think about, eh?

Yeah, way back to when we trained the bastard. Should have used him in training as a target or dojo (sp) dumby.

However,

After posting that I started tracking it down. "I" haven't been successful, but a friend had already seen it and clarified it as an Internet hoax....

The terrorist who Ollie mentioned by name was Abu Nidal; at the time, Osama bin Laden was still a "Freedom Fighter"... he wasn't considered a terrorist until after the Gulf War (1991).

So you know....

Well, he was a "Freedom Fighter" that we trained and supplied.. Look where that got us.

Ollie's a good man, as is Reagan.

Unfortunately, assassination is "illegal". That sounds like a real pile of shit in the face of recent events, doesn't it?

Too bad we're still too p.c. to strap on the big brass ones and eradicate the problem. I'm talkin about the media here too, not just the talibunnies. Suspend bombing for Ramadan? My ass. There's another pile of shit for our children to step in. Better take off Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Boss's Day, and Earth Day just so no one is offended. We'll drop bombs on you on Monday, but not on Tuesday, then we'll resume bombing your ass on Wednesday. Aren't we nice people?

I agree w/ everyone here. I still say Bush should have chosen the top 5 terrorist groups int he world and targeted those, show those bastards that we can track you bastards down anywhere and at any time. We really need to show off our power on this thing to quell any future tries.

Leslie,

Thanks for clarifying. That had the ring of bullshit the first time I read it. Ollie North is and always has been a dolt.

Assassination is only illegal if the one being bumped off is the head of a country. The US govt can 'legally' assassinate anyone but the head of a country.

(Got a friend in the mil who's trained as a sniper who explained the technicality to me.)

Hey Leslie,

I was howling reading "The Onion"'s archives on religion the other day. I thought of you and thought you'd see the humor in it. It's worth a read. David loved the one about the minister and his wife, I thought the little boy in the wheel chair piece was hysterical. If you don't read it, try: www.theonion.com

Karen,

I haven't read through their other stuff, but the article from Hell about what's been happening to the terrorists after their arrival, well, I'm almost embarrassed to say that I was LMAO over that one.... I'll have to go and give the rest of the site a read-through, since you've suggested it.... :)

Do yourself that favor, Leslie...and report back on the color of the pastor's wife's hair....(VBG). That was David's favorite line in the whole article. I still like the kid one, but they were all pretty funny.

"the red out of my wife's hair", eh?

I DID like that one.... :) My wife's hair is an auburnish reddish color....

I've never thought of myself as a prude, but I think some of them did go a bit too far. Most weren't too bad, but a couple, well....

Some, though, actually made some darn good points.... a few on the face would make poignantly cutting insights, but then you can think through and actually make a lot of sense from it. Others, they would illustrate some of the fallacies of blindly following something without really understanding it....

Bottom Line (IMO):

Political correctness will get us killed and laughed at. If Russia had been attacked as we were on September 11th, there would have been 3 or 4 Arab cities turned into parking lots within 6 hours...and as for retaliation? No one would dare.

Hey Leslie,

I'm back from vacation and trying to catch up a little. Yup, you quoted (part) of David's favorite line from that "article". Now I'm going to have to re-read and see which of the contributions went too far....(VBG).

Karen :)
