OK.....i figured this was a good of a place as any to ask about this place.
I am thinking of taking a nice long weekend (4 days) to Vegas with a buddy of mine. Most likely the end of Jan. or mid Feb.
Just looking for ideas of places to stay and things to do. This would be our virgin experience in the city of sin.
Also.....we are not high rollers by any means and don't need to stay in the best places. Nice.......but not too nice. Would rather spend our dough elsewhere!!!

I heard the Hard Rock was a cool place, but we are looking to just sticking to the Strip i think. We really don't want to be driving all that much and we may even bag the rental car thing.

Thanks for any input guys and gals.

You can't go wrong in vegas if you are going mid week stay at any of the big hotels and it will be cheap that way you can get the experiance of the big Hotels and what they have to offer then on Fri. go to a motel 6 and pay the say as you were for mid week at the big hotels.
Big hotels mid week are about 49 a night based on double ocp. on friday that can jump from 150-250. There is a ton of free stuff to do that is actually fun as opposed to just being free. also I would get a car for at least one day but for the most part you won't need a car.

was talkin to Mike Pope at Truckhaven. He said that one of the casinos was letting a 1800 sq ft. penthouse suite go for about $89/night. This suite is bigger (and nicer, I'm sure) than my freakin house. This was in reaction to Sept 11 fallout...

Just do your homework and you'll probably find some killer deals. Obviously, the casinos are hyper-competetive to get you to stay in their hotel so you'll spend your money at their tables...

When you get there, also make some last minute calls. If someone has a sweet room that isn't rented, they'd rather let it go to schmucks like us for $89 than have it go unoccupied for $0. Check the cancellation policy for the hotel you make reservations at.

The Venetian is the best hotel on the strip, hands down. Stay there and just stroll to your casino of choice.

They're ALL hurting, big time, so you can get deals if you're staying a few days.

Be sure there's no big convention in town or you'll be screwed on room deals.

Check out http://www.lasvegas24hours.com/meet-4.asp to be sure

Last time I stayed at Belagio, (about 3 years ago) for lunch, a hamburger and fries cost $17.00 (not counting beverage). Since I was there on business with my company, we were able to expense everything (luckily, LOL, our bills were whoppers!!). We walked to most of the places we wanted to go to (except when we were too inebriated, then we raucously split cab fares ;-) We also had the shuttle driver from the airport stop at a liquor store on the way in to the hotel, and we stocked up on our favorites (you can only get so creative with an expense account :)). Haven't been to Vegas since; Like everyone else, I hear there are some good hotel and entertainment deals right now - Have fun! :)

It's been a few years so I can't really recommend a place to stay, but if you plan on gambling, Downtown is the place to go.

Gambling on the strip reminds me of AC, fast paced and not super friendly.

I like Binions Horseshoe - very laid back and they have single deck blackjack (better odds). You also need to see the light show and check out Glitter Gulch :)

If you're into shooting, there's FrontSight which offers free machine gun classes.

Sorry for the ramble, you can contact me off-line if you want more info.

And if you are into Star Trek, don't miss the Star Trek experience at the Las Vegas Hilton.... They also have real Klingons in Quark's bar there..

I would stay in any hotel on the strip. I think many are offering special. Contact your travel agency. If you are located in a city with China Town, go there and see the travel agency can give you special deal. You may be able to get room, meals, plus chips(usually $50-100) for a norminal cost.

IF you plan on going there like once a year or so, go to big hotel such as MGM. Many of my friends always get free rooms, meals, and chips (FREE) from MGM after their 2nd stay. Just to make sure that you get those "Card" when you gamble.

Enjoy!

Eric, that's funny you mentioned that - Last time I was there, (see post above) there were 2 BIG conventions going on; One was a popular computer convention, and the other (unbeknownst to me) was apparently a porn convention. One night, while we were having a grand old time, me and my only other 2 female buddies in the company (AKA: partners in crime, lol) noticed "everyone" else seemed to want to head over to The Rio. A few of the younger guys kept insisting we go there with them. Finally, we went ahead, and charged right along with them. It took me a full hour before I was finally made aware of what seemed a little "different" over there (HA!). A few of the guys were pointing out "celebrities", however, I didn't recognize any of them (???) ... The look on a few of my male colleagues faces when they saw me there was priceless - (like their wife had just walked in or something, lol). Anyway, we high tailed it out of there. :) I can't recall exactly right now, but I think it was in January ...

it is in jan. and it coencides with the CES show (the consumers electronics show) I used to own a stereo shop and would attend the CES to see all the new products. that was until of course one of my buddies mentioned what other show happens at the same time. Funny my wife didn't want me to go after that.

i have been feverishly looking for that convention, but with no such luck. i did find a convention for the 'cheerleaders of america'. this could be good!!!

i used the site from keith, but it shows not listings for the adult entertainment convention. :(

good site otherwise.

ok....back to vegas. i have the hotels narrowed down to 1)New York, New York 2)Rio 3)Paris and 4) Monte Carlo. anyone have any input on these? all about the same price. Rio seems to have the nicest rooms from what i can tell. but any first hand knowledge?
and yes Ho.....i will take note that Paris has really nice towels!! :)

I like RIO. Depending on how much coin you drop in the casino, They give away everything for free. Best part the the rooms in the tower have one wall thats all glass and all view.

Keep in mind, By coin....I'm not rich but my buddy lost 16K in the casino on their card earned back 12K off of it. We racked up 17K in expenses for the week, they comp-d us everything except for one buffet meal and a couple of cocktails.

17K!!! .. hehehe, and I had the shuttle driver stop at the liquor store to stock up on the way in ... you can tell what a "high roller" I am! :)

Cheap Kim
Never stayed at the The Rio myself, but my friends were talking about it just this weekend; Spoke well of it - said that all the rooms are suites(?)

Hey G, I stayed at the luxor a few new years ago...It was a blast, and they had a great casino. The food was sweet and the room, with a heart shaped jucuzzi was like 100 bucks a nite.

plus the whole theme thing was pretty cool as well.

we ate our moneys worth thats for sure, but somehow never saw abill

if you have AAA they help alot too, kills like 30% of your room rates.

joshua

ps, how was the weekend, given the circumstances?

that's pretty rough kyle. but my standards are always low, so i will not be expecting much. just having a good time and taking in all the 'features' of the city. haha

josh. the weekend was actually pretty good. (without sounding shallow) saw lots of old pals and watched extreme ski movies and drank lots of JD and yuengling in honor of jeff so to speak. it was just a big party for 3 days straight and no letting up. just the way he would have done it i am sure. but still pretty sad for all. a group of us may hike a 15'er in Jackson and spread his ashes in the spring/summer.

where is the damn snow?? i am getting pissed. :)
