The largest meteor shower in 35 years is to be this weekend. Actually 5:09 a.m. EST on Sunday to be exact. Will take place in the Eastern sky. So all you early birds get out there and take a gander and you folks in the west just party late and stand on the roofs of your trucks in the parking lot of the bar you happen to be.

i guess the show from the west will not be great. not really sure though. speaking of alaska my friend JUST emailed me about the northern lights. she said they are pretty amazing at this time. and rob......did not get to see any of them from our neck of the woods. then again i was not really looking or paying attention either.

it lasted about 30 mins. it started out as a mist that floated across the skyover my farm. i thought at first it was some kinda of odd cloud formation but as it moved in a streak of mist would shoot out of it towards the south and a warm red tint would form. then the whole cloud turn red with finger like streaks, all of which was red it was only red tho. ten years ago i observed a whole rainbow of colors. all in all in was reathtaking to me. my wife on the other hand thought i was nuts to be standing in a corn field with nothing on but a coat and underwear on!

bad visual. really bad visual!!! it sounded really nice until you mentioned the whole coat and underwear thing. when was this? i was driving from baltimore a week or so ago and think i may have seen this. (referring to the sky.....not your hideous outfit)

Yeah, I agree with Garrett. Nice visual until the underwear thing, Mike. Sounds like you were about to be visited by aliens, but the tightie whities must have scared them off.

I'll try to party late and stand on top of the Disco like Garrett suggested. I'll most likely hit my head on the ceiling of my garage though.

It's the Leonid Meteor shower. I got married on Nov 20th and it was a killer light show for the guests at the outdoor bar to enjoy. I cashed in some major favors to arrange the meteor deal...

I plan to set the alarm for 0500 EST to catch the show on the roof of my Disco out in the back yard. It will be the first time in recent memory that I have been awake and alone (married, 2 kids under age 5...)

I got pictures of the aurora developed, they are hard pics, but if I can find a scanner, I could send them to someone. They were taken from the roof of my '94 Discovery, so they are obviously relevent to this site!

Just came back in, saw a couple of good LONG streakers, and several nice regular-size ones that were really bright, and many faint ones. Neat....

It's 6:12 here in CT, with clear skies and I just watched for two hours...it was absolutly amazing! I have some long exposure digital pix @ 3.3 megapixel...I'll have to really examine them later today to see if I caught one! They were everywhere!

Very cool! Although, we didn't get to see it at 5:09 a.m. We woke up at 5:40 a.m. and still saw quite a few! None of that "one-per-second" like they were saying. That must've been earlier. It was more like one-per-twenty-seconds. Oh well, very cool though!

well at 04:55 there was a dense fog that had completely covered everything less than 50 feet tall, in other words my 94 was about a foot short so i didnt get to see a thing, oh well i guess i have a reason to live another 99 years.

Ahhhh. There's nothing like getting up at 5:00 am to take a really cold meteor shower. It was a fantastic show. I spent about an hour watching from my back yard and was able to count about 40 in 15 minutes, I lost count after that. It was nice to see things falling from the sky that didn't have people in it.

I woke up kinda accidentally at 3am and moved to my camping air-bed outside for 3 hours.

Best meteor was very bright, and left a tail I could see for over a minute. Counted about 10 per minute.

Now, I'm not a meteor watcher, but I prob saw more that night than my whole lifetime put together!

Pretty cool - we were camping in the GWNF and woke up early and drove up the trail to the top of Second Mtn - 360 deg view and not a cloud in the sky - no other outside lights for miles - watched for about 45 minutes - pretty freakin amazing show!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Dean Brown (Deanbrown3d) on Monday, November 19, 2001 - 01:34 pm: Edit

Bill,

How many could you see per minute, average?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Bill Bettridge (Billb) on Monday, November 19, 2001 - 02:04 pm: Edit

Dean - honestly don't know - they were coming fast and furious from all directions there for awhile. Seemed to be no rhyme or reason to their origin or direction. We could only watch one slice of sky at a time :)

If I had to guess, for the first 1/2 hour, anywhere from 20-30/minute, but then some longer breaks with many fewer, and then a period of more activity

We were in the Caribbean last week for the show and it was an incredible sight. We got up about 4:30 and trouped out onto the beach, pulled out the loungers and watched the show. We always see falling stars down there, but at times we were trying to catch the sight of four falling at once. We didn't even try to count, we must have seen a couple of hundred at least. Unlike Maryland where we live, in the islands where we go there are no hills and no trees to obscure the view, so the meteors seemingly fall all the way into the sea. It was fascinating to notice the dipper constellations rotating in the sky. We also caught sight of a few satellites. It was warm, the surf was crashing and it was a lovely time spent with my beloved.....
