It's great to be an official member of the group finally. Today was a glorious day. I had the pleasure of getting my 2002 Vienna Green Disco SE.
The experience was very positive. When I arrived at the dealer, the vehicle was in its own showroom on dispaly. The sales rep went over every aspect of the truck in detail. I know that I'll have to review some points because I was so excited that I must have missed several things.
He told me that even though the manual says use premium gas, I could use regular, in that the quality of our regular gas is superior to European regular and that's why the manual recommends premium. Any comments on this would be appreciated. I can't wait to drive it all weekend. I hated to leave it when I got home. I hope everything continues to work well and that I have few surprises.

Congrats Mitch,
You gonna love one of the best 4x4 in the world.
Recommend using the higher octane, i personnaly noticed the diffrence. Try to go offroading with
stock trucks and watch there EYES pop out.

willkomen! und kongradulations!
i finally saw the vienna color on a rangie at my local centre and it looked nice. it just might take a while before you will be able to transition from yuppy-mobile to camel trophy reject - but trust me - it will happen, slowly or all at once, but it will happen!!

Great! You will be even happier about your DSII once you experience your first 3 plus trail!
Regarding octane choice. I notice no knocking or pinging using mid-grade, just a bit lower mileage. My tires are two sizes above stock so power wise...six one way, half a dozen the other. Being AR, I stick with the premium.

Thanks for the input guys. It is greatly appreciated. What do you recommend for tire pressure? I believe the sales rep said 28lbs for the front and 35lbs for the rear. Tires are 18"
I know that off-roading is in my future, but it smells and looks so good, I want to keep it clean for just a little while.

Landrovers are not made to look or smell new.
Thats what i said after i picked up my 2001 D2.
One week later i had the D2 in 36" of mud, trust me they look better in mud graphics than original paint. Noticed a big improvment in MPG when tires are inflated to 42psi on HIGHWAY.
PS. check out my photos under ALEN BABAYAN, first set all stock second set OME 2" HD.

Welcome to the club! One time when I first got my '94, I was washing it at my GF's house, and we were talking about that tire shine stuff, and whether to use some, and she goes "don't bother, its a Land Rover. YOu shouldn't HAVE shiny tires on a truck like that". Pretty much sums up how I use my rover now...Welcome anyway, and get it dirty to see what you REALLY bought..

Congrats Mitch! I've had my 01 for 5 months now and I can tell you I've had a truly gratifying experience so far. My wife and I took it offroad recently with some guys from around Dayton Ohio. These guys knew what they were doing and had a wonderful course set up on a beautiful farm. I really don't have the desire to be an offroader much but I'm glad I did it, as the Disco is really phenomenal offroad. I've had more serious 4 wheelers (or so I thought) over the past 30 years but the Disco is heads above. You're going to love it!

Also have an D2 02, unfortunately I am experiencing a strange driveline harmonic resonance. I am hoping it goes away with some miles... denial really. I just can't bring myself to plunge into the pit of despair known as "service" in the auto industry. I'll wait until I am good and therapeutic on my neuroleptic medicines and take the truck in one of these days. Otherwise, I like what they've done with the D2 under Bimmer tuteladge.
I fear that Ford is going to muck it up some. They have down graded Jag, and are going to move volvo HQ from sweden to California... Swedes just don't think right in all that heat..
I personally am not ready for a rebadged, hussied up Ford Explosion trying to cash in on Land Rover cachet.

ANOTHER new 2002 Disco owner here!
One more person to ask, "Whats the biggest tires I can fit on my Disco...." and "How do you post pictures?"
If anyone in the Denver area knows of a local shop to make custom skids, sliders and the like (at a reasonable price) - please let me know, I want this baby ready to wheel by summer.

Mike and Mitch, welcome aboard. You should also consider joining us at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/disco2owners. It's a DSII specific list. Lots of great info. Alot of those members are members here as well.

USE TIRE STUFF!
I am serious, the mud just flys off so you don't have out of balance wheels with 50lbs of mud on them. Noticed this when I had only cleaned one tire to inspect for damage.

I would love to join the Disco II Yahoo Group, but it doesn't seem to want to let me. I feel like a dog chasing its own tail trying to appease the registration gods. Oh well.

Sometimes the gods are a little slow. They have real jobs and tend to travel now and then. Give it a day or two.

I actually tend to think its a Yahoo issue, not an Administrator issue.

Thanks Greg,
Joined the yahoo group. Good info.
What's the best tire pressure? Manual says 28/38.
Any thoughts out there? I am ready to put in my first tank of gas. I had a full tank when I picked it up this past Friday. I guess I'll put in premium.
By Greg Davis on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 - 07:53 am: Edit |
To me, 38 in the rear is too high. I usually run at about 6 lbs difference, but I'm getting old (37!) and small bumps and crap annoy me now more than ever. I have always used premium and would reccommend it. To me it's not worth the little money you'll save at the pump to risk damage. Just another excuse for the dealer to deny warranty work. Hehehe.

congrats, Mitch.
so many new Disco II owners...we need more DI newbies!

Mitch, Congrats on the new D2! I, myself, am a new D2 owner. Picked it up about 3 weeks ago. I am also kinda weary about getting it dirty right away. Or at least while the tires still have that shine from the Armour All that the dealer applied.
I'm curious about a few things that maybe someone out there maybe able to answer for me.
- I'm 6ft tall, anyway to get a little more leg room?
- My D2 does not have a lever for the CDL, can that be rigged? If we can't use CDL during off-road trips, would my D2 be less capable?
- What are the best mods to start off with?
I appreciate any help with these questions. BTW, I am getting it dirty this Sunday!! Can't wait!

There are tree buttons right under the reariew mirror on my 02 Disco, not covered in the manual or video. I know that there is a sensor that regulates glare but what do the buttons do?
By Mitch on Thursday, November 22, 2001 - 08:20 am: Edit |
Too early in the morning to spell correctly.
Three buttons under the rearview mirror.
By Glenn Guinto (Glenn) on Thursday, November 22, 2001 - 10:39 am: Edit |
Mitch,
Those three buttons on the D1 are:
(from L-R)
1. Map Light for Driver
2. Auto Dimmer (On//Off)
3. Map Light for Passenger
If I'm not mistaken, they should be the same for the D2. Good luck on your rig and post some pics on your first off-road trip!
Guy, ask Dean about the CDL lever. Carl and Dean rigged their trucks with it.
